Public benefits

Through providing opportunities and promoting participation in sport, primarily through football based activities we directly improve the physical health of children and young people who reside within the Lurgan area; this provides a public benefit. These physical benefits include improved aerobic capacity, improved balance, co-ordination and

mobility as well as improved body shape and posture. These physical attributes are essential for children and young people; they act as the building blocks for more complex and specialised skills which they will learn as they grow older. These skills can be transferred so they can competently play various games, enjoy recreational activities at school and home. Through providing opportunities in a sporting context, specifically football we will improve users mental and emotional attributes which provides a public benefit. Sport can relieve stress, anxiety and worry and provide a social outlet for children and young people to express their capabilities taking part in exercise in a safe, structured environment. Through improving confidence levels and inspiring users to enjoy sport, we are aiding their emotional wellbeing. This purpose is especially important in today’s society where suicide and depression is more common amongst children and young people. TTBS Juniors endeavours to use positive reinforcement and education within sport to promote health and wellbeing. The Charity operates in some of the most deprived areas of Northern Ireland, specifically the electoral wards of Shankill, Pinebank, Drumgask and Taghnevan which are within the Craigavon Local Government District where the majority of our users reside. These wards are all ranked within the top 15% in Northern Ireland terms of multiple deprivation which takes into consideration such areas as health, income, employment, education, living environment and crime. Through providing positive opportunities to take part in football activities, multi sport programmes and educational workshops we are benefitting the lives of these inhabitants. Children and young people reach out for inspiration and TTBS Juniors provides life skills which creates a pathway into society which ultimately improves their quality of life. Research has found that enhanced participation in sport can infer health, educational, social and aspirational benefits on participants. Additionally, we offer subsidised training and education for volunteers, and where possible offer sessional coaching employment through seasonal camps. This offers an opportunity for deprived individuals to secure income and gain vital experience to enhance employability. We provide a public benefit through promoting equality and diversity and religious and racial respect through all the above programmes. These programmes break down barriers and attitudes of local inhabitants to accept all cultures and religions creating a respectful society within Lurgan and beyond. There is, as with many sports, the risk of injury in playing football but this occasional harm does not outweigh the benefits flowing from the purpose. There are no private benefits flowing from the purposes and the trustees will ensure that any potential private benefits will be incidental and necessary in aiding the beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

TTBS Juniors primarily runs soccer coaching sessions in various venues from Monday to Friday each week, with 14 affiliated teams provided for and playing within the local Mid-Ulster and Lisburn Leagues each Saturday. These sessions during the week are open to children and young people from Northern Ireland to take part; however we mainly attract

the majority of participants from the Craigavon BC area. All sessions are taken by volunteers and mainly focus on developing fundamental movement skills of children and young people as they grow older. We intermittently cater 140 children between the ages 3-18 years old. We also organise educational workshops encouraging positive mental health at a number of venues in conjunction with local services such as PSNI and PIPS Upper Bann. These are very important to the ethos of our charity, since they are vital in our local area with various abuses so prevalent. We also provide positive mental health speakers to local schools/ community groups, encouraging vision and focus within education and have also provided speakers nationally. The core services of the charity include the aforementioned activities, however the charity is still growing and we are aiming to run season events for children and young people, such as Halloween camps, summer schemes and intervention programmes. These intervention programmes will be aimed at teenagers. Train to be Smart Juniors creates an outlet for the local community, encouraging parents and our volunteer to improve their skills and knowledge through qualifications and workshops. In this area of Lurgan/Craigavon, with increased alcohol, drugs and social media abuse leading to self harm and suicide, TTBS juniors engages with local groups and schools to promote education of signs and symptoms of anxiety/depression, and to emphasise the importance of sport as a medium to encourage positive mental health within our local community.
