Our purposes of advancing education and the advancement of conflict resolution and reconciliation and the promotion of religious and racial harmony and equality and diversity including the advancement of peace and good community relations are very much interlinked. Our purposes are for the benefit of the whole community in NI and also the border
counties of the Republic of Ireland. We promote and facilitate dialogue between people from different backgrounds on issues such as equality, race, sexual orientation, religion, political issues, conflict, the troubles and many other issues of the day. Through facilitated workshops, and training, people have a safe space in which to share their view point and importantly hear other people’s view points which may be very different from their own. The benefit is that the dialogue leads to an increased, or new, understanding of people from different backgrounds which leads to a more tolerant, harmonious and peaceful society. Through the carrying out of research we are able to examine the current issues of the day which is used as a tool for people to read and understand more about the issues. We interpret the research into a language which is easy to understand and is used as part of the facilitated dialogue. We are currently working to provide this research on a digital platform which will be accessible to the wider public so that they can also learn from the research. More people will then be able to benefit through learning from this work on promoting understanding and tolerance. In the last year we have held over 100 facilitated dialogues on issues such as women and sectarianism in NI, the right to free speech, the flags issue. Various types of community and voluntary organisations engage us to work with them to provide facilitation to explore their chosen issues. We ask all participants to evaluate the work that they have participated in. We are also asked by the same organisations to do further work with them which is encouraging. From time to time we will carry out or contribute to relevant seminars or conferences. There is no harm or possibility of harm from our work as we only use professionally skilled facilitators to ensure that the dialogues take place in a ‘safe’ environment where everyone can participate freely. There is no private benefit. We have included the "any other charitable purpose" clause as we do not want to restrict our work to only two charitable purposes, for example, we may wish to develop our work in the future involving citizenship and community development but it is not something which we wish to do at present.
