Purpose 1- Provide Information Direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the improvement of knowledge and skills of blind and partially sighted people. This is demonstrated by the number of participants who regularly receive recordings. We don’t believe that any harm will arise from this purpose. Beneficiaries are visually impaired
people, primarily those living in the Greater Craigavon area. The only private incidental benefit flowing from this purpose is the increase in knowledge, skills and understanding of individuals who Volunteer with the Association. Purpose 2 – Free provision of recordings Direct benefits which flow from this purpose is to include any and all persons wishing to receive a recording whatever their financial circumstances This is demonstrated by the number of participants who regularly receive recordings. Purpose 3 – Discretionary Provision of Equipment Direct benefits which flow from this purpose is to include any and all persons wishing to receive a recording whatever their financial circumstances are able to do so by the free provision of suitable equipment. Beneficiaries are visually impaired people, primarily those living in the Greater Craigavon area. The only private incidental benefit flowing from this purpose is the increase in knowledge, skills and understanding of individuals who volunteer with the Association. Purpose 4 – Social Integration Direct benefits which flow from this purpose is to make available information about local events and opportunities and thereby encourage Listeners to participate in said events should they wish. This is demonstrated by the number of Listeners and their families, who advise us of the benefits they receive from receipt of the regular recordings. Craigavon Area Talking Newspaper Association (CATNA) is based in Portadown and provides a free service to Listeners in the greater Craiggavon area of County Armagh. Listeners can e found in in Portadown, Lurgan, Benburb, Derrytrasna, Dromara, Tandragee and and points in between. We even have one in Lisburn and one in Londonderry. CATNA
Listeners who are mainly over the age of 65 and are blind or partially sighted. We provide a weekly recording of news gathered from the Portadown Times and Lurgan Mail. "Sound News", is then copied onto USB (Memory stick/pen drive) and delivered to our Listeners. The USB’s are put into distinctive yellow envelopes and the wallets are delivered by, first class post on a Saturday morning, free of charge by the Post Office. After listening to the recording, the USB is then posted back in the same wallet. Over 50 volunteers assist with the news and magazine production at our studio in Portadown and each news recording lasts about an hour. There is no joining fee and listeners receive the recordings free of charge. CATNA is funded totally by grants and donations. Part of a network of Talking Newspapers operating in Northern Ireland and beyond, the Association strives to promote social inclusion to those persons who would otherwise be isolated from events taking place in their community.
