Public benefits

The objects according to our constitution are as outlined below: To encourage the performance and appreciation of music in the district To promote the production of musical plays and concerts The society shall be cross community The public benefit flowing from these objects is to provide opportunities for young people and adults from a diverse

range of backgrounds to come together and learn about musical theatre as a medium for gaining skills and confidence and to provide a platform to allow them to develop their performance skills. The general public are also able to access the arts at a subsidised rate as we fundraise extensively to ensure that musical theatre as a form of self expression is open to all. We act and operate on a cross community basis utilising the arts as a way of breaking down barriers between the different communities. There are some private benefits to members of our organisation which flow from the public benefit and these include: We pay the musical director and the orchestra musicians a fee for their services. This is necessary to ensure that our performances are of a recognised professional standard to inspire our volunteers to become involved. Working with professionals allows skills to be transferred and provides role models for our amateur volunteer performers. Other private benefits include the training we provide to our volunteers. Our volunteers do access training in health and safety, child protection, performance skills, costume making, stage craft, scenery production, make up and costume design and although these are transferable skills they are necessary for the success of our organisation and its work as they provide an incentive for volunteers to become involved and contribute to their personal and professional development. Being able to perform as part of a team enables confidence to be built and self esteem to be raised and can contribute to an individuals progression into professional stage work, however the vast majority of our volunteers will reap benefits only in terms of the satisfaction of participation and the associated raise in personal confidence.

What your organisation does

Our organisation is a music society which organises one production and one concert per year. The production will generally be for eleven performances and the concert for two nights. Our volunteers meet all year to decide on the production and content of the concert and we then develop an action plan to bring these to the public stage. This

action plan will entail identifying the skills required and we will recruit volunteers who will work with the musical director and the orchestra to learn the songs and the volunteer director to develop the costumes and staging and all promotional materials to make a musical theatre performance happen. We also work with a choreographer who is also a volunteer to develop the bigger performance numbers. There is a huge amount of skills development for our volunteers both onstage and backstage and we also have to liaise with venues and our local authority to ensure the shows are staged in the appropriate venue for the general public to be safe.
