Public benefits
The purposes of the Belfast Youth and Community Group are: 1) the advancement of education, and; 2) promotion of the arts; for the benefit of people of the greater Belfast area and beyond. Provision is without distinction to age, gender, sexual identity, sexual orientation, disability/ability, race, and ethnic origin, political, religious or other
opinion. Specifically the BYCG continue to run a centre in which activities take place in furtherance of the above purposes. We advance the education of members of the public in enjoyment of, and participation in, the arts, particularly musical, speech, photography and visual arts. We provide exhibition and performance space, equipment, complemented by seminars and classes, workshops and discussions. Through the involvement of our service users in the running or our activities we promote capacity building and the confidence and competencies, self-esteem, abilities and skills of people, particularly, but not limited to young people, who use our centre. We promote the education of members of the public in conservation, protection and improvement of the environment particularly through our promotion of sustainable lifestyles and diet. The benefit element for purposes one and two are in the development of physical, mental and spiritual capabilities that service users and volunteers may grow in maturity as individuals and members of society and that their conditions of life be improved. This has been demonstrated in BYCG’s record of equipping people, particularly young adults, as responsible and conscientious members of society engaged in a range of musical, artistic and community development roles. Our volunteers and service users are at the heart of our organisation. We encourage, through direct involvement and education the development of service users and volunteers who are engaged with the social and economic circumstances that impact upon them and their peers. Over the years we have encouraged a large number of people from a range of community and ethnic backgrounds to engage proactively as performers, event’s organisers and as community activists. Thus bringing wider benefit than that initially provided by the BYCG to other areas. We provide no private benefit for trustees. In regards to demonstrating public benefit we believe this is evidenced in direct feedback from service users at regular open meetings for users and volunteers; in the encouragement and uptake of direct involvement of service users in the running or our organisation and our centre (service users are encouraged to, and do, become volunteers and trustees/directors); in addition feedback sheets are collected at educational events to record the benefit of such events from the perspective of participants.

In keeping with the purposes of the charity the BYCG maintains a venue at Little Victoria Street which is equipped for the recreational, cultural and educational expression and development of young people from Belfast and the surrounding area. We have worked with, and continue to work with, young adults from the area of benefit alongside relevant
statutory and voluntary agencies to promote engagement in education and the arts with a particular focus on music.
