Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from the purposes are: • Reduced levels of alcohol and drug dependency in the community. • Assistance and recovery for alcoholics and drug users. • Education to help prevent young people from becoming alcoholics and drug users. • Integrity, good citizenship and healthy and productive living, promoted through the
moral framework of the Christian Gospel. Grants are made to a number of organisations each year which the Institute supports. Their work is clearly visible in the community and is the clearest evidence of the Institute’s direct benefits: • The Stauros Foundation (Registered Charity No. CR42868). Stauros offers one-to-one counselling and pastoral care along with residential support for those with substance dependence problems. It organises retreats for teenagers who have an alcoholic mother or father, with the aim of breaking the cycle of dependency that often exists in families. Stauros carried out research with the University of Warwick, highlighting that 67% of people coming to them for help had one parent who was an alcoholic and 25% had both parents as alcoholics. The Trustees receive updates from Stauros workers regarding their work with people in this local area. • The work of the Salvation Army – Trustees receive reports from the Captain of the Salvation Army in Coleraine, who operate a daily help programme from their centre in Coleraine, assisting those with suffering from addiction and alcohol abuse. • The Education Board of the Coleraine Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland – The board supports Christian teaching especially to young people in the Coleraine area, through local Churches and outreach in the community. The trustees are regularly updated on their work. No harm can be identified through the purposes of the Coleraine Temperance Cafe and Institute. The intended beneficiaries are the population of the Town of Coleraine and those in the Counties of Londonderry and Antrim. No fees are charged to service users by Stauros, The Salvation Army or the Education Board of the Coleraine Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. No person or organisation connected with your organisation receives private benefit.
