Public benefits

The purpose of Outdoor Recreation (N.Ireland) is to promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Northern Ireland the provision of outdoor recreation facilities for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the conditions of life of the said inhabitants particularly in terms of health and well-being,

social inclusion, community cohesion and economic prosperity. The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include: 1. Improving the nation’s health and well-being by creating opportunities to widen, increase and sustain the number of local people actively participating in outdoor recreation activities across Northern Ireland 2. Contributing to the development of a strong and shared community in those areas where facilities are developed and community leaders are trained. 3. Empowering volunteering at community level through providing a wide range of opportunities to volunteer in outdoor recreation related activities 4. Delivering quality outdoor recreation facilities geographically spread across Northern Ireland providing informal opportunities for people to engage in outdoor recreation and thereby increase social inclusion 5. Encouraging diversification of the rural economy and improving the quality of life of those living in it through the provision of quality outdoor recreation facilities which can encourage visitors to the area to stay longer and spend more. The charity’s beneficiaries are the population of Northern Ireland as a whole. Through the nature of specific outdoor recreation development work, some benefits are focused on a particular geographic area, but these are in such a way as to maximise the broadest public benefit as possible. For all our purposes the benefits will be demonstrated through regular monitoring and evaluation of our services. This includes for example: • a consideration of the number of new outdoor recreation facilities developed on the ground across Northern Ireland as evidenced through on the ground physical evidence • the number of people using the facilities as determined through the use of on-site electronic people counters, on-line research, public consultation events etc • the number of active volunteers assisting us in our work • the number of people we have trained through providing courses, seminars, workshops etc • the number of people using our promotional tools e.g. websites, social media platforms etc • the number of new businesses set up on communities as a result of the development of outdoor recreation facilities • feedback from statutory agencies and specific project funders relating to the work of our charity The Directors have not identified any harm or possibility of harm arising from any of our purposes. Some private benefit is generated through employing individual contractors on specific outdoor recreation capital work projects and some of our activities can result in increased economic prosperity in an area, for example, when an outdoor recreation facility has been built e.g. mountain bike trails, local businesses such as café owners and accommodation providers can benefit through increased numbers of people visiting the area. The private benefit of any of our work is significantly outweighed by the work of the organisation in advancing our overall purpose.
