Public benefits

Purpose: The Advancement of Health P.O.C.A meets the public benefit requirement for this charitable purpose in the following ways: the direct benefit arising from this purpose is that young people with Autism and their siblings find a safe and welcoming environment at our weekly Youth Club and various other events and activities in the wider

community, enabling them to develop friendships and increase their social skills. Our parents/carers also use our meetings to exchange information and receive support from each other. The benefits are evidenced through regular evaluation of our services by our committee, through feedback and discussions with members who attend our weekly Youth Club and through the recording of participant numbers at our annual events. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. The beneficiaries of this purpose are young people affected by Autism, their siblings and parents/carers. There is no private benefit arising from this purpose and all funds raised go towards the upkeep of our services and the provision of a range of activities.

What your organisation does

P.O.C.A is a registered group with the Education Authority. We run a weekly Youth Club and a support group for young people and their families affected by the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We offer a safe place for our young people to meet, engage socially and take part in a range of group activities with a view to increasing their ability for

social interaction. We encourage parents/carers to stay at our weekly sessions to exchange information, to offer support and to take part in some of the club activities. We hold fundraising events not only to raise money to fund a range of activities but also to raise autism awareness and the profile of our group within the wider community. We encourage our young people to explore new things helping them develop their confidence and their skills. Some of our older group members help out at the club and at some of our outings. We have members from the Derry City & Strabane District council area. Demand for our service has grown steadily since it began in 2012 and continues to do so.
