Public benefits

SDCHS is a rural association which brings public benefit through its work particularly in south Derry. We do this as follows: our purposes of Irish Culture and Heritage is recognised by government as an integral part of the cultural landscape and SDCHS promotes this in S Derry through Irish dance/ language classes, arts, cultural archaeology ,

South Derry oral traditions and living heritage promotion including place and surnames. We benefit the public by organising educational, recreational, and leisure-time activities and provide a community facility where such activities can take place by the public. Our work in community development , citizenship and capacity building is of public benefit as we organise appropriate activities which improve the health and well being and capacity of local people through such as yoga, martial arts, seminars, exhibitions, etc . This provides for e.g. for older people to reduce social and rural isolation, providing a better quality of life and well being. We provide and/or secure the provision of social services and practical assistance for families within the area of benefit to include particularly, but not exclusively, around the needs and experiences of ex-prisoners and their families. This public benefit ensures integration and access to appropriate advice services to programmes such as Fuel Poverty, benefit uptake, health and welfare programmes. This leads to greater social cohesion and better social inclusion as a public benefit. We benefit local people reintegrating into society by providing social skills and specific training to allow individuals to seek employment opportunities. We provide outings and events for those in the community with an interest in Culture , Heritage and the Arts through visits to local areas of interest. This provides opportunity for those to learn about local history and culture collectively through experiencing at first hand. We provide Public benefit by holding consultations on Agricultural reform, local schools closures, ,EU programmes, older peoples consultations etc. This ensures greater awareness and understanding of the main issues which affect our community and helps people make informed choices about issues which affect them. Direct benefits of all our activities include local people in the area gaining a healthier lifestyle by being in community settings and being better informed of available opportunities to counteract disadvantage and poverty indices in this rural area. Our events attract older people ,younger people and a whole range of individuals from section 75 whom reintegrate with their communities improving individual and community social well being and spanning generational gaps. Our education and skills programmes provide for a more vibrant and inclusive society. We can measure these by monitoring our activities to ensure that we continue delivering an effective community service to the public through both qualitative and quantitative data. There is no private benefit to our activities other than some potential for increased capacity to our committee members which is purely incidental.
