Public benefits

Tinderbox Theatre Company focuses on the advancement of the arts & culture. The direct benefits which flow from our organisation’s purposes include creating, developing and producing new theatre plays for audiences in Northern Ireland and beyond, providing support to playwrights, offering specialised outreach programmes to communities across

Northern Ireland, and leading and supporting the emerging theatre sector. The benefits of our productions are demonstrated in the amount of employment we give to playwrights, directors, actors, stage managers, set, light & costume designers, composers, set builders, marketing professionals, and all other staff employed on each production. Audience figures are recorded for each performance, and feedback gathered for each production from audience and press. The direct beneficiaries from our work supporting playwrights is obviously both the emerging and established playwrights themselves, but indirect beneficiaries include other theatre companies and venues who benefit from the work we do with the emerging playwrights in particular, helping them to hone their skills. A number of community and schools groups benefit from our large outreach programme which runs year-round as well as alongside every production. Additionally we offer placements to school and university students looking for work experience. The emerging theatre sector in Northern Ireland benefits greatly from our support and mentoring, and as well as receiving individual advice on running a company or producing shows can also get the opportunity to be involved in larger projects lead by Tinderbox. There are no benefits within our work that would lead to any harm. Tinderbox’s main beneficiaries for productions are the general public within Northern Ireland, particularly those that enjoy theatre. However, we target all adults and young adults for potential audiences. Our outreach programme beneficiaries are often community groups with a link to the topic being addressed, for example Mental Health or Cultural Diversity, but the majority of our programme beneficiaries are general groups or schools who take up the offer of participating in the programme. Our work with playwrights and the emerging sector is set up to benefit those within the theatre sector, but often emerging playwrights will contact us from the general public and we offer the same support and nurturing to them. There are no private beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

Tinderbox Theatre Company is based in Belfast. Formed in 1988, it is one of Northern Ireland’s longest established and most respected independent theatre companies. Since the early nineties Tinderbox has been dedicated to new writing for the theatre, the playwrights who create it, and the artistic environment in which its work takes

place. Tinderbox has created more than thirty world premiere productions that have toured throughout Ireland and appeared regularly in the UK and the US. For two decades their plays have charted the recent history of life in Northern Ireland, through award winning productions. Tinderbox has an excellent track record for innovation: since 2017 the company have delivered professional training through the Play Machine training school and have run empowering community training workshops through the IN8 programme; their ground-breaking Outreach programmes have involved thousands of young people and adults for fourteen years; and in 2010 they created Ireland’s only New Writing Ensemble to produce the award winning True North season. Imaginative co-productions and collaborations have also been a feature of Tinderbox’s work, with companies in Ireland and Washington DC working alongside Tinderbox to produce the work of Northern Ireland’s finest playwrights. Tinderbox has received many awards and nominations for excellence in new writing and production.
