Public benefits

The purposes of the VSB Foundation (‘the Foundation’) are set out in its Articles of Association as “the advancement of education, the relief of poverty and the advancement of community development in Northern Ireland.” The Foundation will seek to fulfil its purposes generally by actively encouraging and promoting the voluntary engagement and

participation of individuals and communities in wider society. Specifically by: i. undertaking research and disseminating information, ii. the provision of finance to voluntary sector organisations, iii. carrying out strategic interventions, iv. fostering and advocating collaborative practice within the sector, the Foundation will support the voluntary sector to benefit from the involvement of volunteers , be more effective and efficient with their resources both financial and human capital and promote voluntary activity and the voluntary sector to the general public. The advancement of education The Foundation seeks to enhance and promote voluntary activity across Northern Ireland, providing information, training and support to organisations who engage volunteers. The benefits which flow from this purpose include: (i) The development and enhancement in knowledge, understanding and skills of individual volunteers participating in voluntary activity. (ii) An improved sense of wellbeing and increased self-esteem of individual volunteers as they develop new skills, capabilities and knowledge via volunteering programmes. (iii) The development and enhancement in knowledge, understanding and skills of organisations providing volunteering opportunities as they receive training and are encouraged to put this training into action. The beneficiaries will be firstly those individuals who participate in voluntary activities and secondly those organisations who provide volunteering opportunities. The relief of poverty Voluntary activity is one significant route for individuals and communities facing deprivation and exclusion to avail of as it provides opportunities to develop skills, gain experience and build community resilience. The Foundation seeks to encourage and promote voluntary engagement as one means to effect change, increase opportunity and assist individuals and communities to confront and tackle the causes of deprivation and disadvantage. Additionally by promoting volunteering and civic engagement to the wider public the Foundation is helping to mobilise social capital to support and bring resources and skills to local community organisations working to combat poverty and disadvantage. The advancement of community development The Foundation undertakes research, pilots and financially supports initiatives that enable and develop voluntary and community activity. The benefits which flow from this purpose include: (i) An improved sense of wellbeing and social cohesion for individuals and local communities as they build relationships with others through their voluntary participation. (ii) The development of skills, capabilities and self-esteem of individual volunteers. (iii) The encouragement of individuals to be good citizens, taking care of the environment and community in which they live and respecting members of other communities. (iv) The improvement, extension and effectiveness of services by the voluntary sector to their beneficiaries. (v) The participation of groups under-represented in voluntary activity. The beneficiaries will be those individuals who participate in voluntary activities, the voluntary sector organisations as well as communities and individuals who receive support, services and practical assistance via voluntary sector organisations. The only private benefit flowing from our purposes relates to the employment of our staff who receive benefits as a result of their employment. We research, evaluate and facilitate participation that enables individuals to become involved in voluntary activity. Pilot and/ or support initiatives that enable individuals to become involved in the community at local, regional and international level. We undertake research and support the development of innovative citizenship initiatives

which promote participatory democracy. We support and enable the collaboration or merger of organisations of common or similar objectives working within the community, in order to increase efficiency and reduce duplication and create a stronger voice for their beneficiaries.
