Public benefits

The public benefits which flow from the advancement of community development and active citizenship are the enhanced community spirit derived from the provision of events which bring residents from the whole village together. Many new residents to the village have benefited from our events to get to know people and now feel like they belong to the

community. Information events and updates provided via facebook, etc have helped to inform local people about issues affecting them such as proposed welfare reform changes, housing matters, etc. Such information benefits local people as they are kept abreast of changes to benefits and various funding which could be available to households. BREF’s involvement in other fora’s such District Inter Agency meetings, PCSP meetings, etc benefits local people by raising issues of concern that agencies are responsible for. A number of improvements to the area have been made as a result of such contacts such as, upgrades to play area, new painting scheme for houses, new footpath, etc. The importance of education is being promoted by BREF which is having a positive effect on our beneficiaries through the provision of homework clubs, adult education classes, education programmes through the youth club. Such activities are delivered to improve the educational ability of local people which has been a concern over many years and visible improvements can be seen. The engagement of young people through the programmes and youth club has seen a reduction in ASB complaints in the village. General health and wellbeing of local community is being improved through the provision of health promotion classes, healthy cooking classes, physical activity programmes for young people. Those taking part in the activities are learning ideas to integrate into the family home. The environmental clean ups, and promoting safer bonfires programme both enhance the local environment in Bushmills for all residents. Young people are now less likely to drop litter in our village through their involvement in our litter picks and the bonfires have become much more environmentally friendly.

What your organisation does

Bushmills Residents and Environmental Forum formed to represent the views and opinions of local people in Bushmills. We work to improve the housing, social and environmental conditions for the residents. We do this by having regular inter agency meetings with statutory and voluntary groups on a bi monthly basis. We also attend the Inter Agency

along with similar community groups to discuss the housing provision and services with statutory agencies. We have also developed good relationships with Moyle District Council staff and local councillors to ensure that problems when they arise get sorted out quickly. We also organise a number of events throughout the year to develop community spirit and give residents the opportunity to come together. Events we have been involved in to date include, Bus Trip to the Zoo, Shopping Trip, Summer Fun Day, Environmental Clean up, Christmas Switch on Event, Easter party.
