Public benefits

Purpose 1 The advancement of education (including the provision of training or re-training courses and facilities) The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include improved educational attainment, an increase in the number people obtaining qualifications, an increase in the provision of community learning opportunities, people having a

better understanding of career options, improved job opportunities, self confidence, self worth, social inclusion and life chances. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from beneficiaries in the form of questionnaires and one to one interviews and through government statistics. The purpose does not lead to harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are people living in west Belfast in particular, but shall not be limited to such area nor shall those who benefit in the activities be drawn exclusively from the residents of West Belfast but northern Ireland in general. A private benefit to trustees may arise in the form of ongoing training in good practice, governance, finance etc. Trustees will gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose 2 The relief of poverty. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include access to alternative healthcare information, complimentary therapies, stress management to those who could not otherwise afford them. To publish, print, distribute and issue papers, books, periodicals and other literature, particularly such as will deal with questions affecting Health and well-being, social and economic welfare of the community. Beneficiaries will have improved health outcomes, reduced stress/anxiety levels, improved self confidence, improved self worth and be more active members of society. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from beneficiaries in the form of questionnaires and one to one interviews and through government statistics. In providing complimentary therapies beneficiaries may experience unintended side effects however this is rare and the benefits outweigh the harm. The beneficiaries of this purpose are people living in west Belfast in particular, but shall not be limited to such area nor shall those who benefit in the activities be drawn exclusively from the residents of west Belfast but northern Ireland in general. What your organisation does

The Belfast Health Initiative was established in 2003 with the purpose of promoting Complementary Alternative Medicines (CAMs). We produce a quarterly newsletter with a distribution of 500+. We organise public lectures with health related themes so that people can make informed choices about their own health and well-being. We have been at the

forefront of lobbying to have CAM's available through the NHS which resulted in a one year pilot scheme based in two GP surgeries in Belfast and Derry where CAM's were available to patients. We also established the Belfast School of Homeopathy in 2003 which is run on a co-operative basis.

The objects of the Company shall be exclusively charitable and be for the advancement of education (including the provision of training or re-training courses and facilities) and the relief of poverty in West Belfast particularly (but so that the Company shall not he limited to pursuing its objects only in such area nor shall those who participate in the activities of the Company be drawn exclusively from the residents of West Belfast)
