Public benefits

The benefits that flow from this purpose include; The prevention of loneliness and isolation by enabling the elderly to meet regularly, Members are given information on statutory rights and welfare benefits from professional and relevant agencies; New skills are developed through educational classes in a range of topics including flower

arranging, crafts, art & craft etc; We provide informational talks and lectures by local councils, citizens advice, PSNI, pharmacies to keep members inform; We also give out Pamphlets/leaflets to inform members about scams, entitlements etc; We provide opportunities to socialise by providing a range of entertainment e.g. singing, dancing, music. These benefits can be demonstrated by the feedback received from the members and their continued support for the group and feedback received from statutory care providers. The beneficiaries of this purpose are initially our membership of local residents over the age of 55 who live within the Holywood and surrounding area.

What your organisation does

The Club offers twice weekly meetings throughout the year for people aged 50 and over to stay in touch, maintain connections and to meet new friends. The Club arranges speakers on issues relevant to the members, including health (cancer/stroke/heart awareness, etc) and well being (emotional and mental health promotion); home safety and security;

PSNI, Fire and Rescue and pharmacy advice). Typically, the group provides a varied programme of activities, including, including: health presentations, for example, healthy eating and exercise; physical activity sessions, such as, dancing, boccia, curling; creative classes, such as, crafts, sewing and knitting, writing; local history and cultural education; intergenerational projects with local primary school children; intercommunity cohesion with, for instance, the Indian, Chinese and Filipino communities. The Club also offers a luncheon club to ensure and encourage healthy eating. There are occasional outings to places of interest and for shopping trips. Formalised training is provided regarding committee membership, community development and community participation. We also provide 'warm packs' when available, to relieve the cold.

To promote the benefits of the over fifties of Holywood and environs without distinction of gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnic origin, political, religious, or other opinions and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for health, recreation and leisure time activities, with the object of improving conditions of life for the older citizen.
