The purpose of Templepatrick Action is to benefit the residents of Templepatrick and the surrounding area without distinction of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic identity, class, marital status, political or religious opinion, by working with the statutory authorities, voluntary and community organisations and the
inhabitants, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants and in particular: (i) To determine the needs and hopes of the people within our community. (ii) To encourage the residents of our area to become involved in community development. (iii) To create an open forum for residents to express their views and opinions and to encourage such expression. (iv) To support measures which sustain, enhance, protect and preserve the environment. (v) To promote a positive, caring approach towards elderly, disabled and isolated individuals in a safe environment. (vi) To provide or to assist in the provision of encourage social, recreational, cultural and educational activities an encourage participation at such in order to develop their physical, mental and emotional capacities so that conditions of life may be improved and social cohesion developed The direct benefits flowing from this purpose include • A forum for government, local government and other organisations to consult with the residents of Templepatrick • A way for the residents of Templepatrick to improve local infrastructure and facilities • A voice for the residents of Templepatrick when encountering issues that affect them • A way to enable communication and engagement for the residents of Templepatrick and local organisations and businesses • An opportunity for residents of Templepatrick to volunteer • A way for residents to meet other people and discourage loneliness These benefits can be demonstrated by • The invitations to the community group from local government to attend events to consult on the local community plan • Invitations from organisations to the group to consult on future house builds • Applications in the community group’s name for funding for improvements such as the local play park or amenities such as benches in the village • Engagement with organisations such as the airport and Translink about issues that affect the community eg park n ride, timetables and traffic • A facebook and website page where residents can pose questions or post information • The organisation of events for the community • The opportunity for residents to volunteer to help at such events and the opportunity for local organisations and businesses to support such events through sponsorship. Templepatrick Action are a group made up of 9 members who meet once a month (except July and August). The group is open to all, male and female, from any religious or ethnic minority, able bodied or with disabilities from within the Templepatrick area. The group was set up in November 2006 to provide a platform for residents to discuss any issues
and look at ways of improving life in the area. There is no membership fee. Past/future activities have included the annual Switch On of the Christmas Tree Lights and organising the Big Picnic Lunch in June. In addition the group has worked with statutory bodies and arranged for dropped kerbs to be installed to assist wheelchair users, lights installed in the pedestrian tunnel under the railway bridge, completion of a footpath along the Seven Mile Straight. We have worked closely with GROW and Antrim Borough Council on the renovation of Wallace Park play park, held public information evenings and invite various guests to speak at our meetings eg PSNI re crime figures, representative from MARA re older people accessing services to which they are entitled but may be unaware, oil clubs etc. In addition committee members have attended numerous community development training courses etc. We have created a website, facebook and email address.
