Public benefits

Lissan House Trust seeks to secure, preserve, protect and maintain Lissan House, it’s courtyard, gardens and parkland for the public benefit. The public which will benefit from the work of Lissan House Trust are people in the local area, the general public of Northern Ireland, as well as visiting tourists from outside the parameters of Northern

Ireland. The benefits for the public will include a greater appreciation and knowledge of historic built heritage, social history, and an insight into a shared culture and history in Northern Ireland. The Trust seeks to stimulate and educate public interest therein, and to foster, undertake and support research on a range of subjects such as history, culture, biodiversity, and to disseminate the useful results of such research for the public benefit. The Trust also maintains 267 acres of parkland for the public benefit. Gravel paths have been laid around the entirety of the parkland, with car parking available, all of which is free of charge and open all year. This allows the local community to use the parkland for walking and recreation, with a shared sense of local space, as well as being attractive for the visiting public on the tourism trail. The public benefits are the promotion of exercise and good health and engagement with the parkland. There are no private benefits or potential harm arising from these aims for the public benefit.

What your organisation does

Lissan House Trust seeks to restore, preserve and maintain the historical heritage building of Lissan House, artefacts, paintings and furniture, as well as its other outbuildings, and to maintain the parkland that surrounds it, all for the public benefit. The Trust facilitates the public understanding of Irish history through guided tours and

general access to the property. The grounds are used daily by the local community as well as the wider community, and so the recreational facility is of public benefit. The indirect benefit of the property are the opportunities for volunteering, facilitaing community service, learning skills and fostering appreciation of Northern Ireland's history and heritage, which in turn helps the wider public benefit. Lissan House Trust seeks to provide a charitable, beneficial purpose for the public benefit.
