Public benefits
The benefit that flows from the purpose of the Besom is to improve the lives of families and individuals who are suffering from financial, physical or emotional hardship, irrespective of age, religion, political, sexual orientation or race. By assisting and caring for people through hardships such as poverty and by providing them with a clean home
and the provision of furniture, clothing and bedding we are providing them with well being and stability at a difficult time, and this is to encourage them to deal with the situations that they face and to enable them to improve their circumstances. This develops community cohesion between those who are able to give and those who are in need, eg encourage people back into employment, and/or assist/support those who care for people with disabilities or illness. Those who benefit directly from our charitable work are individuals, and families referred to us from other statutory organisations or charities, such as Social Services, Homestart, PSNI or even perhaps through another church body, those who reside in the Town of Ballynahinch and within a 20 mile radius. We have helped young single mums who have been under Foster Care through social services by providing on request bedding and baby clothes. We have helped people from communities who have recently come to Northern Ireland from another country and need assistance with furniture and clothing. We have assisted individuals and families with people with disabilities in decorating their homes, or even cleaned and furnished homes in time for children to return from short-term care back with their family. We have provided a shopping service for the elderly or given a carer a break from a spouse/family member with a disability to allow them a short time from the home. A Local community group also availed of one of our volunteer’s teaching skills and an adult English Class was organised once a week for a period that gave the adults the encouragement to enrol at their local college. Indirect benefit goes to our network of statutory bodies where immediate assistance can be given to a work case, bringing relief to a home. Once a referral is made we contact the family or individual with a phone call or visitation, by direct contact we can ascertain their requirements and if there is any other way in which we can help. After we have completed a project we, where possible, carry out a follow up call to ensure all is satisfactory. A record log book is held for all project whether donations or giving. Projects are reviewed comprehensively at our Committee meetings, minuted, and a Report given to Members at the Annual General Meeting. Our volunteers are registered with the Besom and are known as Members, these are people who are willing to give time, money and things to reach out to those in need. We are also provided with support and guidance from our Parent oganisation through seminars, conferences and advice that assists us in overseeing our daily business. Our purpose is to ensure benefit and not harm and to avoid any risk we ensure that all furniture meet the Fire Safety BS standards and electrical equipment is all PAT tested before donated. We are covered by Public Liability Insurance. We cover the insurance for all drivers of the Besom Van.

The purpose of the Besom enables its Church fellowship to give what they can effectively to those in need providing a free service to the community. By doing so the Besom has established a network for referrals through Social Services, Homestart, PSNI and other churches within the local community to identify those that are in need and make said
provision. Those in need cover families or individuals on low income, suffering deprivation, have disabilities, suffering from illness, young families, older people, young adults leaving foster care, immigrants in the local area, to name a few. We reach out by providing furniture, bedding, clothing, toys and white goods as well as offering voluntary help by means of painting, decorating, gardening, shopping, companionship for elderly or for example someone who suffers from Alzheimers. All our helpers/givers are volunteers registered with the Besom and come from the membership of the Church, aged 18 and over, and are known through the constitution as Members of the Besom. We facilitate our helpers through their giving of time, money and things to reach out to those in need. The Besom is then governed by its Committee that meet quarterly and record their business. However, the daily co-ordination of its business is carried out by the Co-ordinator from the premises of Ballynahinch Baptist Church, who also provides us with storage facilities and a place to park the Van. The business of the Besom is carried out within the guidelines of its Constitution and contacts referrals are taken from Social Services who work closely to families and individual offering us a controlled referral. We also work closely with other churches, charities and community groups within the area of Ballynahinch and a 20 mile radius.
