Public benefits

The beneficiaries of all the purposes below are members of the public living in the Knocklynn/Mountsandel area of Coleraine, the rest of Coleraine, Portrush, Portstewart or Ballymoney and their surrounding rural areas, or from further afield, who avail directly of the services and facilities of the Trust or participate in programmes or events

provided by third parties using the facilities or services of the Trust. a) The advancement of education The direct benefits that flow from this purpose are the acquiring or enhancement of skills and/or employability; training which increases knowledge or understanding; classes for enjoyment; and informal education, especially but not limited to, for young people. This benefit is evidenced by the number of educational events and programmes which are provided using the facilities or services of the Trust, how well these are attended and informal feedback from their organisers and participants. b) The relief of poverty and the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare and for recreation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said people. The direct benefits that flow from this purpose are the relief from hardship and distress, the improvement in wellbeing, and the reduction of social exclusion for persons in need. These benefits are evidenced by the number of programmes and events which are provided for people in need using the facilities or services of the Trust, how well these are attended and informal feedback from their organisers and participants. c) Such other charitable purposes of an exclusively charitable nature as the directors may from time to time in their sole and absolute discretion determine. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are the relief of those in need by reason of their youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage through the provision of programmes using the facilities and services of the Trust. The direct benefits of this purpose also include the development of the community in the Knocklynn/Mountsandel (local) area through the provision for social activities and a social venue in its locality and the ability of the Trust through this purpose to respond to the needs of the local community as they arise or they become aware of them. These benefits are evidenced by the number of programmes and events which are provided for people in need other than poverty using the facilities or services of the Trust, how well these are attended and informal feedback from their organisers and participants. These benefits are also evidenced by participation in events or programmes provided primarily for local residents using the facilities or services of the Trust or their direct use of those facilities or services and the informal feedback received from members of the local community. The possible harm which may arise from these benefits is the potential for disruption to immediate neighbours from members of the public arriving, leaving, parking near or congregating outside the Centre. CVAT implements a variety of measures to minimise the potential for disruption. The private benefit which arises from our purposes is the provision of income for CVAT’s three part-time employees: the Centre Manager, Caretaker and Cleaner.

What your organisation does

Causeway Voluntary Action Trust operates The Sandel Centre, a community centre in the Knocklynn/Mountsandel area of Coleraine. We provide a venue for charities, community groups and local businesses to serve the local community. We operate on a not-for-profit basis and aim to provide excellent value for money, especially to charities and community

groups through special discounts. The Centre is also widely used by the Health Service and for training and educational classes. We support the running of a café in the Centre which acts as a social hub for the local community, with on-site parking making it very popular with older local residents. The Sandel Centre is also the home of Mountsandel Christian Fellowship and through maintaining the venue, we help them to serve the community through programmes such as youth clubs, summer schemes, parent and toddler groups and others.
