Purpose 1 The museum collects, preserves and interprets objects relating to the culture and heritage of County Down. This benefits the community by: preserving important aspects of heritage that might otherwise be lost; preserving the heritage assets of the locality; encouraging appreciation of local heritage to increase understanding of cultural
traditions, identity and diversity; improving educational aspirations in the locality; increasing knowledge of local history and culture; increasing civic pride; encouraging community debate and understanding; providing opportunities for cross-community and inter-generational engagement; adding to the local economy by encouraging visits to the museum; increasing opportunities for social engagement in the locality. These benefits are demonstrated through evaluation forms and publications. The Friends have organised learning and cultural events for members and the general public. These have included in the past few years, events focused on the 1798 rebellion in Down, Burns night events, walking tours of the local area, craft demonstrations. The Friends group has also taken part in major PEACE III projects which resulted in a number of publications disseminating information on local history, including townland maps of Lecale and Strangford Lough areas, a booklet on farming in County Down and leaflets. Members of the Friends also took part in cross-community workshops on local religious diversity. Evaluation forms for these activities are available. Copies of publications are also available. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiairies. ************************************************* Purpose 2 Increasing understanding of the development of local heritage; developing skills in preservation and interpretation of local history and culture including preserving and disseminating traditional crafts and skills; increasing personal and group capacity building including skills such as tour guiding, event organisation, demonstrations; engaging with other members of the community to encourage knowledge and appreciation of local heritage and culture; improvement of local community relations by bringing groups and individuals together to work on joint projects. The organisation provides extra funding for Down County Museum for curatorial and educational purposes. In addition to raising money through talks, tours and other activities, we may also act as a conduit for other grant aiding bodies for the same purpose. We help in other ways, acting as ambassadors for the museum in the community, raising its
profile and lobbying if required.
