The direct public benefit flowing from the purpose of Roslea Community Historical Society is that local people have an opportunity to participate in activities that advance their education of the living and past history and culture of their district. Local population benefit from learning about local history and folklore, local historical sites,

genealogy, traditional crafts, crochet making. Local population and visitors benefit as a result of the society’s successful efforts in securing a lease on a disused school and sourcing funds to restore the building as a heritage centre which numerous artifacts relating to the history of the area with a particular emphasis on agricultural practices and crochet making. Local population and visitors can benefit from the genealogical records that the society has collected over the years enabling them to obtain information on the history of their families. Local population and all others benefit from journals that the society has produced on local history and culture. Local population, persons from neighbouring communities, visitors to the district benefit from activities genealogy classes, reminiscence classes, local history classes, photographic exhibition townland history talks and exhibitions. These benefits are evidenced through recording numbers attending and participating in society’s meetings and activities and through feedback received from the local population and visitors to the district. There is no harm flowing from purposes of the society. The only private benefit flowing from the purpose of Roslea Community Historical Society are payments made to tutors, speakers or other specialists who are engaged to develop the activities of the society.

What your organisation does

Roslea Community Historical Society was founded in 1986 and is open to all those from Roslea and district who have an interest in local history and currently has a voluntary committee of eleven persons. The society is based in Roslea Heritage Centre, a two story stone built building located in Roslea village in County Fermanagh. This building was

a school constructed in the 1850’s, which closed in the 1930’s. The building had been used by the local parish for a garage and was then vacant for a number of years. In 1991 the society secured the lease and funding to restore and adapt the building so that it could be used as a Heritage Centre. The centre includes an exhibition space, meeting room, office space and café area. Exhibition area has displays on local agricultural practices, crochet making, photographs, local townlands. The meeting room and office is used by the society for their activities and to provide classes on topics such as local history, reminiscence, crafts and crochet making. The society has documented a lot of local history and folklore in the four journals that they have produced and they are currently working on compiling further journals. The society has documented extensive historical records on the townlands of the Roslea district. The heritage centre is also used by other local organisations to hold meetings and activities. The café is used to provide light refreshments for visitors and for charitable coffee mornings.
