Public benefits
Conserving native endangered red squirrels for future generations to enjoy. This also enhances tourism by attracting the public into the local area and gives the local community a pride in their native biodiversity. Educating and informing the public, enhances their skill sets and has a benefit to physical and mental health by engaging them in
the great outdoors. TRSG recruits and trains volunteers over 18 years giving them life skills which may be of benefit in later employment opportunities, appreciation of their local biodiversity and relieves social isolation. The group volunteers monitor the red squirrel populations in Tollymore Forest Park and report any grey squirrel incursions to the Forest Service Wildlife Officer who is licensed to carry out grey squirrel control on Forest Service property. There is no private benefit or harm.

We actively engage with families, school children, teachers and the the general public at our annual Red Squirrel Day. This year we have broadened the scope of our event by reaching out to other wildlife charities and organisations to host a more diverse event and offer a broader educational educational experience. Ulster Wildlife, The Deer
Society, RSPB, Raptor Society NI. Forest Service, NIEA, Down Districy Council, Newry and Mourne Council, butterfly Conservation, SportNI at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre all participated. All the activities were fun based and educational such as red squirrel safaris through the forest, tree identification, paper pot making and acorn planting, red squirrel puppet show, badge making and other craft activities, all provided completely free of charge. At all times when promoiting the conservation of red squirrels, the volunteers from Tollymore Red Squirrel Group are acting as facilitators and are not at any time or in any way responsible for children or vunerable adults. The volunteers welcome and reach out to people of all ages, ability, religion, ethinicity etc. when promoting the conservation of red squirrels.
