What your organisation does

Schola Cantorum enhances the liturgy for the congregation of St Peters Cathedral and provides the opportunity for people to listen to and enjoy classical music promoting the arts, heritage and culture. Schola Cantorum auditions boys from the age of 7 from schools mainly in the greater Belfast area to identify those with a vocal talent who with

tuition and encouragement can become valuable members of Schola Cantorum. Schola Cantorum rehearses twice weekly with the boys travelling to St Peter’s Cathedral for instruction under it’s musical director and his assistant. The boys are introduced to church based classical music which they quickly learn to appreciate and enjoy as evidenced by the number of boys who remain with the Choir from the age of 7 until they depart for third level education. Schola Cantorum sing at the 11am mass in St Peter’s Cathedral each Sunday and give monthly recitals during which the boys perform together and as their ability and confidence grows they are encouraged to sing or play, for those proficient with an instrument, a favourite solo piece. Schola Cantorum are regularly invited to sing at other churches and ecumenical services and have appeared at a number of high profile public events. In addition Schola Cantorum has travelled to among other places Rome, where they sang for Pope Benedict during mass in St Peter’s Square and to Paris singing at Notre Dame Cathedral.
