Public benefits

The objective of the Club is to promote and encourage the art of swimming and its associated activities. The benefits which flow from this purpose include supporting people of all ages and abilities in achieving their swimming goals, improving health and well-being, and promoting social inclusion through sport. The Club recognises the importance of

grass roots and recreational swimming programmes and each year we help hundreds of people learn how to be more confident in the water. The Club also supports those who are wishing to participate in the sport by offering more specialised training. These benefits can be demonstrated through feedback from participants and the success of Club members in competition. There is no harm arising from this benefit. The Club’s beneficiaries are people living in Northern Ireland, although given our location, the majority are from Greater Belfast. The Club’s provision covers all age groups and abilities. A private benefit to trustees may arise from our programme of ongoing training in swimming instruction, governance practices, finance management etc. Through this training trustees gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

We have activities to achieve competitive excellence, as well as providing opportunities for the development of completely new swimmers. We are an inclusive club providing for and celebrating all age groups, genders and abilities. Our ‘Learn to Swim’ programme, for example, is for those who are new to swimming who require assistance with their

stroke development and overall swimming ability. These sessions create an opportunity for children to make friends, take part in games and a healthy form of activity which is enjoyable and educational. We teach children essential safety that may one day save their or someone else’s life. Our recreational sessions are around building fundamental skills and confidence, as learning to swim for the first time or returning to the sport, generates a real sense of accomplishment. It can also provide further challenges along with being a healthy form of exercise and improving public health overall. As participants begin to develop their abilities, they are then offered the opportunity to compete and represent not only their the club, but also their region. Leander ASC has a rich history of success and positive representation at club, regional and international level. Our various groups have dedicated pool time with teaching/coaching resources allocated each week. We have a strong base of qualified teachers, coaches and tutors as well as a number of volunteers who supervise the sessions we deliver and open up their expertise to people of all abilities. We encourage our members to 'give back' to the community by promoting the values of volunteering, and have a significant uptake across the board including our young people. Leander ASC has a strong civic purpose and through all of these activities combined delivers significant value to the local community and beyond.
