Lagan Village Youth and Community Group (LVYCG) offers a range of centre-based and Outreach programmes which help to ensure a wide range of people from the community get the opportunities to enhance their social and environmental wellbeing. Thus individuals and families are provided with the accessible connections within our centre to the wider
community’s social networks and the required information, allowing them to further develop new opportunities and achieve a better quality of life for themselves and their families. LVYCG operates inclusive activities to create social, educational and economic inclusion for the local disadvantaged community of Lower Ravenhill and Woodstock areas. This area has a population of around 2500 people from a range of diverse cultural and social backgrounds, with a high degree of educational under achievement, low incomes and social welfare dependency. LVYCG delivers programmes appropriate to the needs and wants of local people, creating a sense of belonging to all. This enhances their aspirations and motivations towards achieving a better quality of life. We provide social support and advice on a range of social issues from housing advice, welfare benefits, education and other issues to all within the community, providing them with the ability to fulfill their requirements and support them in seeking resolution to any problems. We provide cultural diversity programmes to ensure that people from all cultures are accepted and embraced by allowing for greater interaction between ethnic groups and local indigenous people. Catering for a range of local people, we provide access to the relevant education and training opportunities within our centre, with particular focus on those with few or no qualifications. We also provide people with the appropriate progression routes and the links to help them into the further education sector, identifying skills gaps and barriers to employment and developing and providing relevant training. We provide a twice-weekly English class for ethnic minorities, whose first language is not English, thus enhancing their chances of employment. We also provide a twice-weekly two-hour homework club for local 11 year old to 16 year old schoolchildren whose parents find it difficult to assist them with their school work. We engage with local schools to assist school children and the difficulties that they may have, thus allowing parents and children to develop a healthier environment and wellbeing within the family. Our Centre’s facilities are available daily, delivering a wide range of cross-community and inter-community programmes for all ages. This enhances social trust, cohesion and supports the ability of families in the community to live harmoniously together. We do this by holding workshops, festivals and cultural events to educate a range of people about the cultures of other local groups. We offer programmes which create better mental and physical health opportunities for individuals who may feel isolated or socially excluded, e.g. our daily Mothers & Toddlers sessions, our weekly healthy living programme catering for a range of people with health needs, our weekly Pensioners Lunch Club and the daily healthy living sessions provided in our well-equipped Fitness Suite. Our daily youth engagement programmes provide a range of activities and personal development opportunities, enhancing the young people’s abilities.. LVYCG gathers qualitative and quantitative information on every programme and project to assess the impact. All data recorded includes information on attendances, age, gender, the aim and objectives of the programme and whether or not these were met. In addition to statistical information and data recorded, we also conduct an oral survey of participants for their views on programme effectiveness and content. There is no harm or private benefit flowing from the purposes.

We provide facilities in the interest of social welfare, for recreation and other leisure time occupations, with the object of improving the conditions of life of local inhabitants. A twice weekly Advice Service (staffed by the East Belfast Independent Advice Centre) provides vital assistance for local people with the completion of Social Welfare benefits applications, debt, and other professional, independent advice. "Lifeline" holds weekly Counselling sessions in the Centre. We promote arts and culture via our weekly Social club for local people, including those from an ethnic minority background, and also via our weekly Drum and Fife school.
