Cookstown & Western Shores Area Network is the local rural support network supporting community organisations in the area West of Lough Neagh, of Cookstown, Magherafelt and Dungannon also known as Mid-Ulster. We are a membership based organisation managed by a voluntary Board of Directors made up of 10 representatives elected by rural community
groups. Full network membership is open to all rural community development organisations and associate membership is open to all other community and voluntary groups. The benefits flowing from our purposes are that rural community groups receive ongoing support, capacity building, mentoring and advice. This means that small rural groups are more effective and better able to work for their individual communities as they can access training, advice and technical assistance. This provides the groups members with the necessary skills and experiences required to promote community projects within their own areas of interest. Member groups also benefit from the projects we deliver related to community development , health, regeneration, welfare and anti-poverty issues. They also benefit from projects around human rights, conflict resolution, equality and diversity. As the groups benefit from our activities: individuals from rural communities will in turn benefit from the work of our member groups leading to improving in competency, education, skills sets, in health and well-being and in general living conditions. Individuals and groups improve their community development practice and civic leadership roles and their voluntary time contributions provides more effective, equitable and improved local community. Members of the most socially and economically disadvantaged rural communities develop their knowledges and skills to better meet the needs of their communities and to enable them to participate more fully in society. These benefits will be evidenced by feedback from member groups and participants on our capacity building, education and training services. The charities beneficiaries are members of community groups and also those individuals who may be considering establishing or joining community groups. The public benefits are measured by the number of organisations applying for membership to CWSAN, the numbers of projects we can offer to the Mid-Ulster community and by the number of interventions made by CWSAN Officers and volunteers to individual community organisations. The development and sustaining of positive community development activity and the engagement of rural communities in the projects we deliver are important measurements. Our activities are monitored regularly by funders such as DARD, PHA, OFMDFM and others. There is no harm flowing from our activities and no private benefit other than the employment gained by Officers or Tutors/Trainers/contractors of the Company and which are ancillary to the work of our organisation. All our work is geared towards benefiting individuals and community organisations operating in the Mid-Ulster area and the only private benefit to individuals is an increase in knowledge, skills and understanding in community development which might be transferrable to other situations but which is incidental.
... [more] [less]What your organisation does
CWSAN exists to support member rural communities and in particular community development organisations who largely function on the western shores of Lough Neagh, Cookstown Magherafelt and Dungannon, (known as Mid-Ulster). CWSAN links and networks communities and their representative groups to projects promoted by the EU, by statutory departments
such as DAERA, PHA, local Trusts and to local initiatives linked to the voluntary / community sector and to Councils primarily in Mid Ulster. The charity delivers educational courses, training for individuals and organisations to help build capacity, personal and group development. We provide mentoring support through our Project Officers for direct interventions with community organisations. CWSAN assists groups to develop and practice good governance and develop appropriate policies and procedures. We assist them with committee skills , fund raising advice , community audits, action planning, strategies and support them in their day to day operational group activities where required. We promote and implement projects of a strategic nature which further our purposes. CWSAN aims to ensure that local rural community organisations are sustainable, effective and more efficient and that their voice is represented and heard at consultations, community planning, rural development and other relevant government arenas and programmes.
