Public benefits

The public benefit flowing from the purposes of Cornstore Youth Club is that more than 300 young people from the Draperstown area are brought together to engage in a series of activities which included beauty night, movie night, magic show, disco, football tournament, fitness to name but a view. Many of the young people also participate in the

Presidents Awards both Bronze and Silver levels. Some individuals participate in international project while others are involved in life skills, intergenerational projects, dance and have the opportunity to attend programmes promoting self confidence and self esteem. Young people benefit by improving their personal skills, understanding health and well-being issues, leadership. The community benefits in that young people are given a well organised and managed programme of intervention which ensures that they are kept busy and therefore do not engage in anti-social behaviour. The Club works closely with the PSNI, local community safety organisations so that young people get to know local police officers and police officers get to know the young people on friendly terms thus avoiding friction in a district which had been prone to relatively high levels of anti-social behaviour in the past. Parents also benefit from the knowledge that their children are engaged in positive activities, supervised by responsible adults in a safe secure environment. This is no harm flowing from any of these activities and no private benefit apart from the wages paid to the workers which is ancillary to the overall activities of the project.

What your organisation does

The organisation is a voluntary youth club which provides a series of varied activities for young people from the Draperstown area. The Club works in co-operation with the PSNI and Magherafelt Community Safety to help fund activities such as intergenerational activities, dance, beauty, life skills, fitness, discos, football tournaments,

leadership, positive health & well being, self confidence and self esteem. These activities are broken down into specific programmes and young people are encouraged to participate in the Presidents Award which is a ten month programme encouraging confidence and self esteem. In the last year 45 young people completed this award. The club also makes links with other local clubs developing relationships and learning about other people's points of view. The club provides a safe secure environment where all activities are supervised by a group of enthusiastic qualified leaders and mentors. The group tends to pay close attention to local issues. Draperstown has an unfortunate record of mental illness so the club had a dedicated programme of talks, meetings and activities focusing on these issues. The club tries to ensure that young people are purposefully engaged in enjoyable activities which ensures that they are not tempted to become involved in anti-social behaviour.
