Public benefits
1. The advancement of citizenship or community development: The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include giving older people the prospect to meet on a weekly basis in Dromore, with additional activities organised for throughout the year. There are opportunities to learn and reduce social isolation in our rural community and build
community spirit and relations. These benefits will be demonstrated through retention and increase of numbers of older people attending the weekly activities and further events organised by Autumn Leaves. 2. The advancement of education: The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include keeping older people informed. With people increasing their knowledge, they will be able to make informed choices with regards to their lives and widen their skills and knowledge in various areas. These benefits will be demonstrated through post evaluation forms completed by the members. None of the purposes will lead to harm. For all three of the purposes, the charity’s beneficiaries are people living in Dromore, Co Down. In relation to the three purposes, the only private benefit flowing from this purpose is the Group’s programme of ongoing training that a trustee may attend in relation to good governance, finance etc. Through this training, trustees gain skills and expertise which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

The overall aim of Autumn Leaves is to bring older people out of their houses into a friendly environment. The cross community group has a membership of 40 with an average of 36 people attending weekly. The vast majority of attendees are over the age of 50 years with the youngest member being 24 years and the oldest being 90 years. Apart from
combating social isolation, friendships have been developed over the years. The members continue their relationships outside of the group’s meeting time of Wednesday afternoons. The weekly activities include dancing to live music and bingo. In addition to mixing with others, the attendees are keeping both their minds and bodies active. The group plans trips throughout the year. These included days out to Newcastle, Ballyclare and Carrickfergus. Even though Autumn Leaves organises dances to raise funds for its own group, its members are conscious that other groups struggle financially to provide necessary activities to meet the needs of their client groups. With this in mind, Autumn Leaves has fundraised for charities in Syria and Newcastle’s autistic club, to name a few.
