Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from the charity's purpose include: • improved scientific and technological skills and knowledge for beneficiaries, allowing them to maximise learning in science and technology and understand the relevance of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects to the world of work; • contextualisation of
learning in STEM subjects; • increased awareness and understanding, among beneficiaries, of the importance of the STEM subjects and their value to potential employers; • increased awareness of career opportunities within the STEM sector in Northern Ireland; • enhanced ability for beneficiaries to make informed career decisions; • enhanced interpersonal and employability skills. These benefits can be demonstrated through direct feedback from both teachers and young people involved in the programmes delivered by Sentinus to achieve the purpose, and independent evaluations of programmes carried out by third party organisations, for example Engineering UK and Nuffield Foundation. No harm flows from the purpose. The beneficiaries of the purpose are young people in Northern Ireland between the ages of 5 and 18 years and, primarily, but not exclusively, those who are in first or second level education. Ambassadors/volunteers who support our programmes may derive private benefit by way of enhancement of their personal and professional development. However, this is entirely incidental and necessary to the achievement of the purpose and ensuring beneficiaries receive benefit. In addition, teachers may, similarly, gain private benefit through enhanced awareness of science, technology, engineering and maths subjects, teaching and learning and awareness of STEM industry/careers. Once again this is incidental and necessary to ensure benefit is provided to the beneficiaries.

Sentinus is the home of STEM outreach in Northern Ireland, engaging more the 60,000 young people each year, in programmes designed to excite and enthuse them about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), support their development and enhance their life skills. Working with every post primary school and about 450 primary schools each
year, and linking with business and industry, the organisation supports classroom learning through engagement in activities which demonstrate the relevance of the STEM subjects in the work place. Sentinus activities include: • Research & development projects; • Research placements and bursaries; • Insight and careers programmes; • STEM roadshows; • STEM workshops; • STEM Awards, competitions and celebration events; • STEM role model programmes. The central theme of all the activities is practical, hands on engagement for young people involved, set within exciting and relevant contexts. To support its programmes, Sentinus uses more than 800 Sentinus Ambassadors (volunteers) from business and industry, academia and public sector organisations. These trained ambassadors bring the STEM subjects alive for the young people and provide opportunities for pupils to experience the excitement of STEM in the workplace.
