Public benefits

The Evangelical Protestant Society was established in 1946 as a mainstream inter-denominational umbrella organisation designed to unite evangelical Protestants in the promotion and defence of the historic Protestant and Reformed faith in Northern Ireland and beyond. We seek to benefit our supporters, the local community and the general public by

making known the Christian Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ together with the doctrines and tenets of historic mainstream evangelical Protestantism through our purposes of advancement of religion and advancement of education. We believe that we provide the following benefits: Advancement of Religion The Evangelical Protestant Society seeks to encourage Christians in their faith and also to reach those outside of the Christian Faith through a variety of activities (please see the section entitled “What Your Organisation Does” below for further information). The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include an improved sense of wellbeing for those reading our literature, engaging with us via our website and social media platforms, and listening to our public debates. The indirect benefits which flow from this purpose include the moral improvement in society as a whole which religion is considered to encourage. Advancement of Education Through our literature, website and social media platforms, the Evangelical Protestant Society sets out openly and clearly the basis of the Christian Faith, seeking to educate and inform, reaching out to all with our message. The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is a contribution to the spiritual, moral and intellectual development, understanding and well-being of individuals, including known supporters of our work and any member of the public who makes use of our literature and resources. The above benefits will be evidenced through informal feedback from our supporters and the general public who avail of our resources. The organisation’s beneficiaries are its supporters (both throughout the United Kingdom and further afield), the local community within the Belfast area and the general public in Northern Ireland, with our literature and resources available to all, without distinction. We have no full-time staff or offices, and the only private benefit flowing from our purposes is the formal arrangement with our secretary whereby he is contracted to fulfil certain duties and services and submits claims in arrears in respect of any work completed. However, we consider this to be incidental and necessary in order to further our charitable purposes as it enables us to run our organisation more efficiently. We do not anticipate that any harm will flow from either of the above purposes.

What your organisation does

Our main vehicles for communicating our message are our quarterly magazine, the Ulster Bulwark, which is issued free of charge to anybody upon request, our website and, to an ever increasing extent, social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter (and these have enabled us to reach a wider and younger audience). We also organise and

participate in public meetings and debates which are open to all, and engage in wider debate in the public square through our participation in, for example, radio debates, and publication of newspaper statements and articles. We find that, increasingly, we are engaged in outreach work across the community, seeking to explain evangelical Protestantism to a broader audience in a fast-changing world, engaging in healthy debate and discussion with others who hold views which are different to ours.

Charitable purposes

The purpose of the Society is to unite the Protestant people whose faith is firmly established on the impregnable rock of the Holy Scripture. And who declare their allegiance to the reformed Protestant faith, and thus show their determination to preserve the faith of our fathers and to propagate the Gospel of Jesus Christ among all peoples.
