Public benefits
Education and training The direct benefits generated from the education and vocational training purpose includes the enhanced educational and skills standards of the residents from the local catchment area that participate in training events hosted by the Derganagh Training and Development Association. In addition, by attending training events,
the participants will have new found confidence in their own abilities which will motivate them to acquire additional higher level training and qualifications or obtain/improve their employment status. This in turn will improve the life for the participants and inhabitants in the area. The benefits from this purpose will be demonstrated in a number of ways. Firstly the numbers of participants attending courses will be noted in the attendance register during each training session. These will be evaluated to determine if each course has a full complement of attendees. Also the incidence of those returning for further training in similar or completely different disciplines will be quantified. Secondly the numbers, as well as the percentage of those attending training courses that attain a recognised qualification will also be determined. Finally feedback following each training course and at the Annual General Meeting of the charity will be collated and analysed to assess the success of all the training provided. There are only limited private benefits from the deployment of this purpose. The latter benefit are only through the enhanced training that the trustees and volunteers of the charity will obtain by attending events hosted by the Association. The improved awareness in areas such as Finance and Accounts or First Aid is incidental and their acquisition will serve to improve the overall effectiveness and beneficial nature of the charity. Public benefit – Citizenship and community development The benefits flowing from this purpose are that in the socially deprived catchment area of the Derganagh Training and Development Association, the provision of facilities and social activities will encourage social interaction amongst residents. This will involve all sections of the local community, especially the more vulnerable and disadvantaged including the elderly, financially challenged, single parents etc. This purpose will enhance the capacity and confidence of residents which will in turn help to rebuild the community spirit locally which is so gravely lacking. In essence this purpose will catalyse good citizenship, community cohesion and hence community development. The benefits from this purpose will be demonstrated in a number of ways. Firstly the numbers of participants attending courses will be noted in the attendance register during each social event. Also the representation from each section of the community will be estimated and social events provided to ensure all are catered for. Also feedback following each social activity and at the Annual General Meeting of the charity will be collated and analysed to assess the success and relevance of all the events provided. There are only limited private benefits from the deployment of this purpose. The latter benefits are only through the enhanced social interaction that the trustees and volunteers of the charity will experience by attending events hosted by the Association. The improved interaction with others in the community will help build new friendships while strengthening existing ones. This in turn will facilitate the effectiveness of the charity as the enhanced familiarity will help encourage participants to attend social activities organised by the committee members and volunteers of the charity. The benefits of the charity will be to all sections of the community without hindrance, discrimination or bias to age, gender, sexuality, religious grouping or ability.

The refurbishment included installation of insulation, a new floor and complete repainting. The kitchen and toilet facilities have also been upgraded. A projector with speakers was installed to provide audio-visual output during training and social events. The Association offers transport facilities by having members trained to drive the local community transport mini-buses. This has been used to take parties on shopping trips and to sporting events. Also members of the Association effectively represent the community at local community workshops and development events. For example they have attended the local woman’s forum and the local Council “Community Planning Event” Many of the activities hosted by the Association could not be undertaken without financial input and a significant proportion of the time input to the Association is involved in securing funding. This includes raising money directly from the community and securing financial assistance from funding bodies. The Association has been very effective in this regard. In summary the Association provides an invaluable service which has ensured the development of the community and an enhanced standard of living for the residents therein.
