Public benefits

Purpose 1: The advancement of Citizenship or Community Development The direct benefits which flow from this purpose is an increase in the effectiveness of local charities, community groups and associations and their effective use of charitable resources, an increase in community infrastructure and facilities , an increase in partnership work and

increased engagement with statutory bodies. The benefits are demonstrated by the number of new community and voluntary groups, the increase in the capacity of existing community and voluntary groups, the number of additional programmes developed, increased governance and the number of funding applications made. We don’t believe that any harm will arise from this purpose. Beneficiaries are members of community groups and individuals who may be considering establishing community groups living in the area of need. A private incidental benefit to trustees may arise from participation in training programmes. Purpose 2: The advancement of Education Direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the improvement of knowledge and skills of communities. This is demonstrated by the number of participants involved in learning and development programmes and through feedback received from internal evaluation and progress reports to statutory bodies, funding agencies and others. We don’t believe that any harm will arise from this purpose. Beneficiaries are members of community groups and individuals who may be considering establishing community groups living in the area of need. The only private incidental benefit flowing from this purpose is the increase in knowledge, skills and understanding of individuals we work with. Purpose 3: The relief of those in need by reason of youth, age, ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantage. Direct benefits which flow from this purpose are a better understanding of the factors that contribute to poverty and deprivation in communities, awareness raising of existing and emerging needs within communities, the enabling of people to overcome barriers to services and the identification of new services and the development of activities to meet gaps in provision. The benefits are demonstrated by the number of individuals engaged from the targeted groups and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of activities. We don’t believe that any harm will arise from this purpose. Beneficiaries are members of community groups, individuals who may be considering establishing or joining community groups and members of the general public living in the area of need. The only private incidental benefit flowing from this purpose is the increase in knowledge, skills and understanding of individuals we work with. Purpose 4: The advancement of health or the saving of lives Direct benefits which flow from this purpose include raising awareness of the importance of health and wellbeing in the community, to empower communities to take action on the multi determinants of health, signposting to other relevant organisations and networking. Benefits are evidenced through monitoring and evaluation of activities developed to promote health and wellbeing. We don’t believe that any harm will arise from this purpose Beneficiaries are members of community groups and members of the general public living in the area of need. A private benefit to trustees may arise from training programmes. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

ABC Community Network (ABC) is a registered charity and community based umbrella organisation supporting over 180 voluntary and community groups in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area. ABC, which was established in 1996, works with and supports the development of a significant and diverse range of groups including for

example groups that support; older people; people with disabilities; ethnic minority communities; and people from both urban and rural communities. ABC is a community development organisation supporting all sections of the community. Membership is free and open to all fully constituted community and voluntary groups within the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area. The ABC Board of Directors is made up of representatives from the membership base. ABC provides a range of physical support services and practical assistance for existing and emerging groups and the local community including: room hire, meeting space, provision of office accommodation and “hot desk” facilities , IT Suite, help to establish and develop groups, good governance, funding information and advice, dissemination of information, administration and finance related services including payroll, capacity building programmes, promoting collaborative working, providing networking opportunities, lobbying, development and delivery of training and support programmes. ABC works in partnership with a wide range of organisations, at a local and regional level, and is also involved in the development and management of a wide range of community based projects and forums and acts as a voice for the sector at a local and regional level seeking to ensure that the needs of local communities are represented to public bodies.

Charitable purposes

The charity's objects (Objects) are specifically restricted to the following: To promote, further or support any purpose for the benefit of the community in the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area (the “area of benefit”) which are , or hereafter may be deemed under the law of Northern Ireland to be charitable, and in particular: (a) To develop programmes and services to advance community development, citizenship and education, promote volunteering, relieve poverty and distress, youth and the aged, and for the promotion of good health, and the promotion of racial harmony and diversity. (b) To promote and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of charities and voluntary and community groups by the provision and management for such organisations of office accommodation, conference, training, information, advice, payroll and other facilities, services or support.
