Public benefits
Insight meets the public benefit requirement: Insight promotes social inclusion by providing facilities, offering programmes of speakers, recreational activities, information and advice to blind and partially sighted people and their carers’ in Mid-Ulster (Cookstown and Magherafelt Council Districts). This will improve both the knowledge of sight
impairment and create a better understanding of the conditions of life for people with a sight impairment. We help to tackle social exclusion by providing social and recreational activities in a safe and controlled environment building self esteem of those with a sight loss and their families. By researching, producing and distributing a quarterly newsletter in alternative formats (Large print & audio CD) we are promoting the advancement in education through issues pertinent to blind and partially sighted people and their carers’. This in turn encourages the development of individual capabilities, competences, skills and understanding. We are also enabling people to access information in their preferred accessible format. Insight has been able to provide specialised equipment for those in need by reason of disability; we have been able to purchase a laptop and a specialised speech package called Jaws to enable our secretary (who is blind) to record the minutes in an accessible way. This laptop is also available to any group member who wish to use the Jaws software. In order to facilitate recreational sport we have been able to purchase specialised equipment; for example Boccia and New Age Kurling. Families of individuals with sight loss are supported so that they are not left isolated. They come together and meet each other in a safe and friendly community and this will improve the quality of life of our members in the Mid-Ulster area. We promote equality and diversity by eliminating discrimination on the grounds of disability by networking with other voluntary, community and statutory organisations so our presence is known. This in turn means the general public form an enhanced knowledge about the conditions related to visual impairment they will also gain a knowledge of the effects that such impairments has on both those who suffer sight loss and those who care for them. It will create a much greater understanding so that the visually impaired are not stigmatised but are accepted into a wider society. Members take part in providing Visual Awareness training to local organisations and we take part in local disability strategy consultations’ ensuring the needs of people with a visual impairment are highlighted. The beneficiaries are members of the Insight group; made up of local blind and partially sighted people and their carers from Mid-Ulster. Membership has grown from 6 people who initially set the group up to a membership of 39 people. This has steadily grown over the years. We evaluate the groups’ activities verbally and we make a written evaluation of achievements and activities for the group at the end of each year. There is no Harm There is some private benefit as members are beneficiaries of information and advice from external speaker who attend monthly meetings, through training offer: for example, committee skills training, first aid etc also through increasing skill by engaging members in the production of our quarterly newsletter in both large print and audio formats.
