Public benefits

Purpose Number 1 – to provide amenities and facilities for the benefit of the public to enhance their quality of life. BENEFIT ELEMENT Benefit that flows from this purpose – improvements to the health and well-being of all participants through access to the River Walk, on-going maintenance and landscaping of areas by volunteers, art features

located around the village and the refurbishment of an old historic Scutch Mill Houston’s Mill; development of community pride through a greater sense of ownership and increased visitor numbers; improved living conditions. Demonstrating this –this benefit is demonstrated by the increased number of events/activities. We have had positive programme evaluations and personal feedback. Harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit – the Trustees do not see any potential harm. PUBLIC ELEMENT Who the benefit is for – the benefit is for the people of the Broughshane area in particular but not exclusive to others e.g. visitors and friends. Private benefit, incidental or necessary – the only private benefit is an improvement in the mental health of people living in the area. This benefit is incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Purpose Number 2 – to preserve a historic building at Houston’s Mill and other structures of historical or architectural interest in the Broughshane area. BENEFIT ELEMENT Benefit that flows from this purpose – increased awareness/appreciation of history, architecture and the environment and enhanced knowledge through the preservation of local heritage and subsequent access to a characteristic building located on a beautiful landscaped site, on the banks of the River Braid which is accessible to all. The public have daily access to Houston’s Mill and can see inside the original mill wheel and read the history of the mill and its association with the linen industry. There are also displays for public viewing. Existing tenants in the building have brought health services to our community. Demonstrating this – this benefit is demonstrated by general feedback and evaluations. Harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit – the Trustees do not see any potential harm. PUBLIC ELEMENT Who the benefit is for – the benefit is for everyone living in the Broughshane area and to visitors and friends. Private benefit, incidental or necessary – the only benefit is the increased visitor-spend in the village. This benefit is incidental and necessary contributing to sustainability of the benefit to our beneficiaries. Purpose Number 3 – to organise further education classes including crafts and hobbies for the benefit of those living in the Broughshane area. BENEFIT ELEMENT Benefit that flows from this purpose – advancement of education, increased skills and knowledge of the participants and the encouragement of lifelong learning for all age groups, which can improve chances of employability. Demonstrating this – this benefit is demonstrated by the increased knowledge and skills of participants of all ages and our increase in numbers. We have had positive evaluations and personal feedback to say that the classes have a beneficial impact on the health and well-being of those participating. Harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit – the Trustees do not see any potential harm. PUBLIC ELEMENT Who the benefit is for – the benefit is for all ages of people living in the Broughshane area but not exclusive to others. Private benefit, incidental or necessary – the only private benefit flowing from this is the gaining of additional skills, which are transferrable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

The organisation looks after the community development in the area promoting active citizenship. Through on going landscaping and maintenance programmes delivered by volunteers we have provide access to the River Walk pond project, provided art features and developed/landscaped a number of sites in the area. We have refurbished an old Scutch Mill

and interested in other structures of historical and architectural interest for the benefit and enjoyment of the public. We offer educational training programmes to all ages thus increasing skills and knowledge which is transferable and provides lifelong learning which ultimately can lead to chances of employability.

Charitable purposes

The objects of the Company shall be to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Broughshane and its environs (the "area of benefit") without distinction of age, sex, race, political, religious or other opinion, by associating with the statutory authorities, voluntary organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to: (i) advance education, in particular but not exclusively by the provision of training in horticultural skills and knowledge; (ii) provide such amenities and facilities for the benefit of the public, in particular but not exclusively flower displays in public areas, river walks, wild flower meadows and tree planting; (iii) preserve and refurbish for the benefit of the public the Houston's Mill building in Broughshane and other buildings or structures that may exist in the area of benefit of particular historical or architectural interest.
