Public benefits

Your public benefits are: The trustees believe that this purpose satisfies the key elements of the public benefit requirement. The direct benefits which flows from this purpose are: • It will help to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of voluntary and community organisations and projects in the area. • It will improve the cooperation and

networking between voluntary and community organisations in the area so that they work better and with fewer gaps or overlaps. • It will promote or assist in promoting community capacity building programmes and projects for the benefit of the people in the area of benefit who have need of such assistance as a result of their youth, age, disability or infirmity, or social and economic circumstances, in an effort to increase the abilities, skills and self-confidence. • It will promote and further the conservation maintenance and protection of features of the landscape in the area of benefit with geographical, physiographical or amenity value and to enhance their contribution to existing environmental amenities. • It will promote good community relations in an effort to foster a sentiment in favour of equality, religious harmony and diversity and thereby endeavouring to eliminate racial, religious and sectarian discrimination. • Through this it will encourage and support the development of a thriving, happy and sustainable community. It will advance education by working with local schools to encourage and facilitate liaison and co-operation amongst them, and between them and other relevant local initiatives and activities such as sports facilities. These benefits are evidenced through effects such as: • The number of local organisations joining Holywood Shared Town as members and participating in initiatives such as Hollywood Connects. • The number of people from the area participating in events such as Culture Night and attending initiatives such as the Community Café – and the consequent sense of community spirit. • Endorsement feedback from other organisations such as the North Down Borough Council instigated Holywood Masterplan being entered for an award for the quality of the local consultation. The beneficiaries for this purpose are people in the residential and business, communities in Holywood and the surrounding area. The Trustees believe that there is no harm flowing from this purpose, that there is no direct private benefit to individuals and that any additional unintended benefit to organisations or indirect private benefit to individuals is incidental and only that necessary to achieve this public benefit.

What your organisation does

To achieve this purpose Holywood Shared Town acts as a focal point for the community and voluntary sectors within the Holywood district. For instance: • It has delivered the annual Culture Night which, in 2014, attracted 7000 people into the town to enjoy the activities. • It is exploring the potential to develop a local model of domestic energy

efficiency and supporting energy services. • It facilitated a joint response from interested groups to the Masterplan consultations and facilitated a number of consultation events and activities. • It has brought together a number of local groups as Holywood Connects to exchange experiences and develop a Holywood web-site with a local events calendar. • It organises a weekly Community Café as a meeting point especially for those living in the Redburn and Loughview estates. • It is exploring the potential, in conjunction with other stakeholders, to develop Redburn Country Park to provide a variety of community services and attractions and thus to expand its use.
