Public benefits

Purpose 1 The direct benefit which flows from this purpose includes encouraging and providing opportunities for people to become active in a voluntary capacity to develop projects to reduce social isolation and address the needs of both groups and individuals within Portaferry and surrounding area irrespective of age, community or political

background, ethnicity and ability or disability. Local people have benefit through their participation in programmes and activities offered including health, community cultural events, environmental improvements, these benefits have included improving the physical appearance of Portaferry to encourage investment that may help to bring new jobs to the area. In addition we organise activities for individuals living in Portaferry and surrounding area improving the quality of life, the participants learn new skills and also have the opportunity to share their skills and knowledge with each other, improving their mental health and physical well being by reducing isolation and providing a social outlet for people. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from participants and beneficiaries and by the level of uptake of our activities. The charities beneficiaries are people living in Portaferry and the surrounding area. A private benefit may arise from our programme of training and education projects. Through this training Trustees may gain skills and experience which are transferable to other settings, these benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the continued development of our group and its work. Purpose 2 The direct benefit which flows from this purpose is improving co-operation and communication between the different community organisations within Portaferry creating community cohesion by sharing resources including equipment, volunteers, etc. PCCL has 20 different member groups represented on it. The benefits include sharing knowledge and skills between these different groups, running project in partnership with others and avoiding duplication. Projects run jointly are open to all and address social isolation including intergeneration work benefiting young and old. Also joint work between groups includes improving the physical, social and economic appearance of the village which benefits the wider community by addressing dereliction and making the village more welcoming through signage which helps encourage investment, which we hope will bring jobs in the longer term benefiting those unemployed. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from participants and beneficiaries and by the improved relationship between young and older people and by the level of uptake of our activities. What your organisation does

Portaferry Community Collective Ltd, firstly provides space for local groups to come together and deliver projects to benefit the people of Portaferry and surrounding area irrespective of age, sex, religion, political background, disability, ethnicity or sexual orientation. We have 20 members groups and also work with a broad range of others

including the local schools and statutory organisations. We have delivered a Programme of Public Realm Works for Portaferry in partnership with Ards Borough Council, this involved working with both local primary Schools and the Seniors Group to employ an artist to develop entrance features for the village, also we painted derelict properties around the village and have replaced old and tried summer seats with new ones. With an Older Youth Forum with have run a Halloween Bonfire programme addressing the problem of wildcat bonfires throughout estates within the village to a single community bonfire with youth activities. We have run a fun day to make community aware of the lovely park we have at Exploris. We have delivered a Community Pharmacy project in partnership with our local pharmacy running health workshops and carrying out a survey to identify the health needs of our residents. We have supported other local groups raise awareness of their projects such as 'Friends of Exploris Trust'. We are currently in the process of developing a new Village Plan for Portaferry in partnership with all the other local groups in the village. We loan out of our equipment 'Community Event Resource Pack' to other local groups free of charge for their community events generally on loan to 15-20 different groups throughout the year. We have run genealogy classes for local residents and held a health fair. In December 2014 we won the NIHE Rural Community Spirit Award Competition for Large Village, this we entered in behalf of all of the community in Portaferry.

Charitable purposes

The Charity’s objects (“Objects”) are to:- To advance citizenship and community development in Portaferry for the public benefit by: (1) Advance citizenship and community development to inspire civic values and encourage voluntary and community activity in areas of health, the arts, culture and heritage and education. (2) Develop and implement programmes concerned with promoting community cohesion through physical, social and economic improvements to the appearance of the area of benefit and impacting on the quality of life of residents.
