Public benefits

Our purpose is to promote social inclusion for children and young people through the provision of youth programmes and activities for children and young people aged 5 to 25years. The direct benefits which flow from the purpose include an increase in the number of children and young people participating in developmental programmes and activities,

resulting in reduced youth exclusion; increased youth participation; increased youth resilience; empowerment of young people; leading to increased participation in the community; increased self-worth, self-confidence and self-esteem, leading to reduced negative behaviours. These benefits are evidenced through our annual reports; children and young people’s evaluations; staff evaluations; our six month reports and through community feedback through voluntary and statutory organisations. The benefits outweigh any potential harm. To mediate against any potential harm the organisation ensures that all the organisations policies are adhere to including; health and safety procedures; risk assessments are carried out in advance; staff are qualified in first-aid and have completed child protection training and the organisation has 3 named child protection officers. Any external hired service providers have also all the required health and safety and child protection requirements. The Benefit is for children and young people aged between 5 and 25 years. Potential beneficiaries are also the family and friends and community these children and young people come from. A private benefit to our staff and volunteers may arise from our programme of ongoing training in first-aid; child protection; youth work etc etc. Through this training staff and volunteers gain skills and experience and qualifications which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.

What your organisation does

On Street Community Youth was established in 1996 to work within the Greater Shantallow area of Derry. The area we cover has high numbers of incidents of negative impact behaviour and ranks extremely high in all the Noble Indices that indicate deprivation. We work with young people whom have disengaged from mainstream provisions and are most

vulnerable and at risk of engaging in anti-social; criminal and risk taking behaviour such as drugs and alcohol. The project operates all year round with street work operating 7 nights per week. On Street Community Youth deploy a detached youth work model to engage with young people ‘on street’ in their own area in order to build relationships with the young people and offer support; guidance and intervention programmes. On Street Community Youth promotes social inclusion of children and young people by promoting and providing a wide range of programmes and activities to help children and young people reach their full potential.
