Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from purpose (a) include any person located in Northern Ireland having access to an established therapeutic healing programme, delivered by an experienced organisation. People can address their trauma in a safe and secure environment, and move forward, released from the stress of trauma to enjoy a better quality of
life. These benefits are evidenced through collecting detailed information from participants and facilitators on their experience and assessing the outcomes. We monitor participant experience by using Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) questionnaires. We have been using the ORS Scale for many years and our evaluations clearly demonstrate that in every single instance participants on the programme benefit. The evaluations show that all participants to date have moved beyond the point where therapy is required. In providing therapeutic programmes for suffers of trauma, there is a risk that a person working within a group could be affected by another person’s story. We have highly developed monitoring and evaluation mechanisms and clinical supervision to help support facilitators and participants. We can show that this harm is outweighed by the benefits as our evaluations show that the suffering of trauma has been relieved by attending our programme. The direct benefit which flows from purpose (b) enables victims of trauma to continue their personal development and journey of release from the devastating long-term effects of trauma by engaging in a professional training programme and becoming facilitators. Training as a facilitator meets the charitable objective of Education and Training, both training sufferers of trauma to help others who have suffered and facilitating their ongoing personal development. These benefits are evidenced through regular feedback and evaluations completed at training sessions. The Wider Circle also distribute books on trauma, to educate sufferers of trauma on what they are experiencing. As well as proving to be essential guides to professionals and healthcare practitioners. The direct benefit which flows from purpose (c) is that the trustees of the organisation can make decisions at meetings to raise funds or to establish and support the future of the charity.

The Wider Circle is a charity formed in 1997 which works to assist people who have suffered trauma. We promote self-help and personal development by delivering group programmes which address trauma, and also by providing publications on trauma for both suffers and practitioners. Our vision is that all are healed from trauma and living in
harmonious, resilient communities. We deliver unique therapeutic programmes which enable the participant to place the trauma in the past and in the broader context of their lives. This is a process of self-healing in a structured and safe environment. Outcomes are significant with stress and anxiety resulting from the trauma being demonstrably reduced. We provide programmes to anyone who has experienced a trauma for any reason. These include bereavement, abuse, torture, substance abuse and other forms of oppression. Participants also have the opportunity to train as programme facilitators which furthers their personal development and allows them to help other sufferers of trauma. Only people who have participated on the programme can facilitate the programme, this creates a unique sense of trust in the group and is fundamental to the effectiveness of the programme. The Wider Circle also distribute books on trauma, to educate sufferers of trauma on what they are experiencing. As well as proving to be essential guides to professionals and healthcare practitioners.
