Public benefits

The direct benefits following from the purposes include: Purpose 1: by taking dogs from dog pounds our organisation is reducing the cost of kennelling fees for city and borough councils throughout Northern Ireland and, if they are not already, all dogs taken from council dog pounds will be neutered or spayed by our organisation thereby reducing

the number of unwanted and abandoned dogs in the future. This action will ultimately save city and borough councils further expenditure in processing and kennelling stray/surrendered dogs and is of assistance to society at large. By re-homing dogs that have been rehabilitated to members of the public our organisation is reducing the likelihood of the abandonment of that dog again in the future thereby reducing the number of strays/surrenders of dogs to city and borough councils throughout Northern Ireland. Purpose 2: by promoting humane behaviour towards animals through educating the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals our organisation is encouraging compassion by demonstrating to people how to care for injured or abandoned animals in Northern Ireland. Purpose 3: by educating the general public on the importance and necessity of responsible dog ownership including issues such as legal requirements in Northern Ireland to microchip their dog/s and abiding by Dog Control Orders (DCO) our organisation is helping towards creating a safer and more pleasant outdoor environment/community area for all members of the public regardless of whether they own a dog or not. Purpose 4: by offering support and advice to owners of Staffordshire Bull Terriers on any behavioural issues their dog/s may have our organisation is reducing the number of dogs that may otherwise be abandoned or surrendered to city or council dog pounds. The benefits can be evidenced through the numbers of dogs taken from council dog pounds as recorded by the council itself and our organisation and the number of messages of thanks from individuals who have informed us that they will continue to keep their dog/s in their homes. All persons involved with the organisation are volunteers and no person is paid for the work bar refunding of out of pocket expenses for fuel etc. A private benefit to Vets4Pets Bangor does arise but this is incidental and necessary as medical and health care is required for the dogs but is provided by the surgery at a cost. The only harm that may be taken into account is the possibility that volunteers (including foster carers and transporters) are at risk of being bitten by a dog. This small risk is far outweighed by the work our organisation does.
