Public benefits
The trustees believe that our purpose satisfies both elements of the public benefit requirement. Who is the benefit for? The charity’s beneficiaries are: the pupils of primary school age who have been accepted into and are transferring to Carrickfergus Grammar School; current pupils of Carrickfergus Grammar School; former pupils of Carrickfergus
Grammar School and the staff of Carrickfergus Grammar School. What benefit flows from this purpose? The charity will provide financial support to promote and increase individual and collective knowledge. This support will include the provision of appropriate resources for the advancement of education and the support of learning outside the classroom environment. The benefit will be to the individual in gaining increased knowledge in a specific area of study, vocational training or competence. In the support of teaching staff who will gain increased knowledge and competence the benefit will be to the whole school. The encouragement of learning will be of benefit to the general public as individuals contribute to society. Can you demonstrate this? Individuals in receipt of support are required to complete a short feedback statement demonstrating the value of the support given and the benefits which will flow from the support. Is any harm or possibility of harm outweighed by the benefit? The trustees believe that no harm will ensue from the stated purpose. Is there any private benefit? Is it incidental or necessary? A private, but incidental, benefit flowing from this purpose might be that gained by a trustee who also is a parent of a pupil at Carrickfergus Grammar School and whose child receives a financial grant from the Trust. This trustee’s child applies for and may be awarded a financial grant in the same way as all other beneficiaries. The Trustee will absent himself or herself from any meeting at which any such determination might be made.
