Public benefits
The direct benefits flowing from purpose (A) in relation to the promotion of research include contributing to the scientific and medical understanding of MS and its causes and the development of new treatments to cure the condition or provide relief from its effects and symptoms, leading to better health outcomes for those diagnosed with MS.
Further the direct benefits flowing from purpose (A) in relation to the promotion of the welfare of those suffering with MS include improved quality of life, access to services and health and well-being outcomes for those who have MS and indirectly their families, friends and carers. These benefits are demonstrated through the publication of outcomes of research projects and with regard to welfare through the regular feedback from our service users and other stakeholders such as medical and social care professionals and the families and carers of people with multiple sclerosis. We are unaware of any harm that may flow from these purposes. The charities intended beneficiaries are people diagnosed with MS who live in Northern Ireland. Others who may benefit include friends, family and carers of those living with MS in Northern Ireland and indeed those living outside of Northern Ireland, who may benefit from the outcome of research to which the charity may contribute. Six of our trustees participate in the activities of the organisation and therefore may benefit in that way. They access those services on equal terms with all other service users. The training given to our trustees and staff to ensure good governance and the efficient delivery of high quality services may be transferable to other areas of their lives. We employ staff to deliver our services (as well as working with volunteers) and payment of staff is a private benefit, however these private benefits are all incidental and necessary to ensure the benefits are provided to our beneficiaries.

We provide a range of support services to individuals living with multiple sclerosis, their families and carers. These services include information, advocacy, befriending, user-led groups, a fully adapted holiday home in Portstewart, reflexology carers and family and peer support. We also support research into the causes and treatment of MS. In
order to support these services we carry out a range of fundraising activities including sponsored walks, street and store collections, basket campaigns and a range of one off events throughout each year. We also receive donations from the general public and businesses throughout Northern Ireland.
