Urban Mission Initiatives (‘UMI’) seeks to plant new churches in the Belfast area which make known the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is achieved by: 1. the creation directly by UMI of new churches and 2. partnering with existing churches to offer assistance with church planting. In partnering with existing churches, UMI provides its expertise and
experience to churches both within and outside its own denominational tradition, and to para-church organisations and charities. Public Benefit: Advancement of Religion: UMI promotes teaching from the Word of God, the Bible, at worship services at churches planted by UMI (‘UMI Churches), with services open to all members of the public. We also promote the development of existing believers at UMI Churches, helping them to understand the Christian faith more deeply, and how the Gospel is transformative of every aspect of life. We encourage individuals to respond to teaching received through prayer, worship and Christian service. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: an improved sense of wellbeing for those attending UMI Churches as they enjoy fellowship with others and receive teaching, and the promotion of Christian values for the benefit of individuals, churches and communities. The indirect benefits which flow from this purpose include the moral improvement in society as a whole which religion is considered to encourage. Advancement of Education: We promote teaching about Evangelical Christian beliefs in UMI Churches, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are spiritual, moral and intellectual development, through teaching of the Bible, of members of UMI Churches and the public, and the development of individual skills and capabilities of Church members who are involved in teaching and ministry at public worship services. Advancement of Community Development: UMI seeks to reach out into the local communities in which its churches are based, and to be viewed as being open to all sectors of the community. We seek to transcend the traditional Protestant and Catholic divide existing in Northern Ireland. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose are: the encouragement of those who live in the locality of UMI Churches as they participate in activities organised by the Churches, and the provision of practical assistance such as food and clothing to those who may be in need. The organisation’s direct beneficiaries are churches, para-church organisations and charities within the Belfast area who wish to benefit from the church-planting resources and experience that UMI offers. Communities and society in general will also benefit indirectly from the work of UMI as new churches are planted and existing churches strengthened. The benefits listed above will be evidenced through informal feedback from those who make use of LNCI’s resources. Private Benefit: 1. UMI encourages its Directors to participate in training initiatives to develop their skills and in so doing provide a better service to beneficiaries. Training may be received through independent study or through attendance at conferences. We consider this to be incidental and necessary to further our charitable purposes. 2. UMI participates in a European and American Network, Redeemer City to City (‘CTC’). Directors may attend conferences in Europe and America to strategise with others in CTC and receive training. We believe this private benefit is outweighed by the benefit to UMI as a whole in providing a better service as Directors benefit from the expertise and experience shared by other members of CTC. 3. As part of our fundraising, Directors from UMI may visit churches in America from time to time. We believe that any private benefit that may be received by such Directors is outweighed by the financial investment of these churches. We do not anticipate that any harm will flow from any of the above purposes.
