Public benefits
The direct benefits that flow from purpose 1 is that through the provision of shelter, food, love and care children and young people can be relieved from poverty and suffering and the stresses and strains this causes. The benefit can be clearly demonstrated in the improvement in the health, wellbeing and happiness of the children in the care of the
facility and regular independent reviews and evaluations by independent Social Services and Health Care Professionals. The direct beneficiaries of this purpose are the inhabitants, particularly the children and young people of Rachel’s Place Orphanage / Amy’s Crèche. In some cases a direct benefit may be caused to the child’s family who are relieved of the burden of care. A private benefit arises as the people who work and volunteer in the Orphanage and Crèche gain skills and experience which is transferable to other settings in the wider community. This benefit is incidental and positive and is necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. The direct benefits that flow from purpose 2 is that through the education provided to the young people, in the care of Rachel’s Place and Amy’s Crèche and also children from Sekhalabateng and other local villages, they are being educated and prepared for life. They follow the state curriculum and educate the children formally from age 4 to 7. The direct beneficiaries of this purpose are the children who are able to put their education to good use and secure a future free from poverty, suffering and distress. The benefit is clearly demonstrated through the high level of graduates achieved with a Certificate of Education allowing the children to progress into Higher School. The children are tested and measured against recognised local standards twice a year. A wider public benefit arises as the young people who are raised and/or educated in Rachel’s Place / Amy’s Crèche can use the skills and education they are provided with in the community. These benefits are incidental and positive and are necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. There is no public harm caused. The direct benefits that flow from purpose 3 is that through the promotion, preservation and protection of the inhabitants health they have improved health, receive vaccinations against diseases and have greatly improved health outcomes. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from independent healthcare providers who regularly visit the facility to administer treatments and vaccinations. All children will have their own Health Care Book which records all details regarding that child’s medical history. The direct beneficiaries of this purpose are the inhabitants, particularly the children and young people of Rachel’s Place Orphanage / Amy’s Crèche. There is a slight risk from unintended side effects when medicines and treatments are administered however this is rare, the benefit far outweighs the risk and good records are kept regarding any reactions or side effects to ensure no re-occurrence. A private benefit arises as the children learn how to look after themselves and they learn to trust and visit a doctor when necessary after they leave the facility. This leads to a wider public benefit in that the direct beneficiaries can lead healthier lifestyles and teach and show those around them to do likewise. These benefits are incidental and positive and are necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. There is no harm caused. Purpose 4 – The direct benefits that flow from purpose 4 are the improvements to the lives of people in the local community of Lesotho, South Africa in which Rachel’s Place Orphanage / Amy’s Crèche is located. The benefit can clearly be demonstrated in improved facilities, health, well-being and happiness of the community.
