Public benefits
The direct benefits which flow from the purpose of relieving poverty include the relief of poverty to those individuals making application to the Committee in order to alleviate their circumstances of economic hardship. Where application has been made on the grounds of ill health or disability, the benefits are the provision of
financial assistance that would not otherwise be available for the purchase of equipment or services appropriate to the individual’s circumstances. The benefits flowing from the second purpose is the promotion of the Masonic Charities and other non Masonic Charities by providing information about these bodies to Masons, their families, relatives and the wider public by way of leaflets , lectures or any other means. At its discretion, the Committee provides financial assistance for other charitable purposes as set out in the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 which leads to increased capacity of these organisations to provide public benefit. These benefits are demonstrated through feedback from the lodge almoner or charity steward who has assisted the individual in making application to the Committee and feedback from the appropriate charity. There is no harm flowing from these purposes. The Charity’s Beneficiaries are: -Freemasons, their wives, partners and families and widows, partners and families of deceased brethren who have been diagnosed and are suffering from a life limiting or life changing illness or disability. -Freemasons and widows or partners of deceased brethren who are suffering from economic hardship. -other charities who receive financial benefit from the Committee Some members of the Committee may receive a private benefit on rare occasions as they may have relatives who benefit from the funds raised but this is incidental to the above provisions and all applicants apply in the same way

The Charity Committee raises funds. In doing so, the Committee must not undertake any substantial permanent trading activity and must comply with any relevant statutory regulations. The Committee receives all funds raised by the Lodges, collates, claims Gift Aid and distributes to respective Masonic Funds for distribution to beneficiaries. The
Committee co-operates with other charities, voluntary bodies and statutory authorities and exchanges information and advice with them. The Committee will establish or support any charitable trusts, associations or institutions formed for any of the charitable purposes included in the objects. To Committee will acquire, merge with or enter into any partnership or joint venture arrangement with any other charity. The Committee will deposit or invest funds and arrange for the investments or other property of the charity to be held in the name of a nominee; in the same manner and subject to the same conditions as the trustees of a trust are permitted to do by the Trustee Act 2000.
