Public benefits

Purpose 1: To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wider understanding. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include parenting courses run by the Mothers' Union provide an opportunity for parents, grandparents and carers alike to meet in a supportive environment. Each person is helped to develop their

parenting skills, build relationships and contribute to the stability of family life in society. These benefits can be demonstrated by the demand for Parenting courses and the comments from those who participated. Purpose 2: To encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the Church. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the support provided to parents of the MU resources including a book "Hand in Hand" which helps families include faith as part of their life together and a series of leaflets, "Children in Church". These benefits can be demonstrated by the use of the resources in families. Purpose 3: To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service. Prayer and worship underpins everything Mothers' Union does. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the services carried out by members locally and world-wide through and projects carried out at Diocesan level. There is financial support for programmes worldwide, eg, the literacy and financial development programme in Ethiopia, Burundi, Sudan Malawi and South Sudan. Other programmes include the Family life programme and the parenting programme and campaigning to challenge the mechanisms that perpetuate social injustice. These benefits can be demonstrated by 130,000 people obtaining accreditation in Literacy and Finance in the last 10 years; the improvement in family finances, increase in respect for women when they can read, and improvement in the health and prosperity of those in the Family Life Programme as they gained knowledge of hygiene and agriculture. Purpose 4: To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children. The direct benefits which flow from this purpose include the increased awareness of issues relevant to family life and the protection of children achieved through lobbying. Mothers' Union lobbies the government at Westminster on issues which affect family life. There is a Christian input to issues affecting bills on Child Maintenance, Flexible Working, Flexible Parental Leave, and Marriage. These benefits can be demonstrated by the results of the lobbying and campaigning, eg The Bye Buy Childhood Campaign led to the Bailey Report. Purpose 5: To help those whose family life has met with adversity. Members in Connor support those in need through various projects. 90% of the volunteers in the Belfast Child Contact Centre, which was started by Connor Mothers' Union, are Mothers' Union members. The direct benefits which flow from this project children of separated parents have the opportunity to meet with the absent parent in a safe environment under supervision. This enables families to maintain contact and gives them space to work out permanent contact arrangements. The non resident parent can maintain contact with the children. These benefits can be demonstrated by the number of families who can move out of the Contact Centre and can make more permanent arrangements. Membership of Mothers' union is open to all who have been baptised in the name of the Holy trinity and intend to support the Aim, purpose and objectives of the society. Membership is open to everyone, male or female, single, married or divorced. The beneficiaries of our work would be the general public at home and world-wide who would have need of our support. There is no harm flowing from our purposes. There is no private benefit flowing from our purposes.

What your organisation does

1. Relief of those in need • Holidays in Northern Ireland are provided for families and older persons who could not afford to fund a holiday themselves. We fund holidays in caravans or cottages at seaside resorts, in bed & breakfasts or at modest hotels. • A grant may be made to a child attending a school trip or to a child attending an

organisation camp or holiday. • Our organisation could pay for a coach to take older folk on a day out. • Volunteers from our charity attend Central Belfast Child Contact Centre to help with the running of the centre where children from separated families come to meet with the parent that they no longer live with. We give financial support to the Centre which was a Mothers’ Union initiative set up in 2001. • The members of MU provide mattresses and knitted garments for use in neonatal units. • We knit teddy bears for children treated in A & E Units in Lisburn, Belfast, Antrim and Coleraine. • We supply toiletries to A & E units where patients are admitted in emergencies. • We supply toiletries, towels, toys and clothing to Womens Aid centres 2. Education • We provide Parenting Courses to parishes, school Parent Teachers Associations and Community Groups. These free courses allow parents to explore better ways of parenting their children. • Mothers’ Union Connor financially supports the MU Literacy and Financial Education Programme which teaches men and women in underdeveloped countries to read, write and count. • We provide a Cook Book with handy tips and useful telephone numbers to university and FE students at UU, QUB, Greenmount Agricultural College, BMC, NRC. 3.
