Public benefits

Purpose 1: • By creating an environment that promotes active learning of Chinese culture, history and heritage, students said that although they have integrated into the local community they would also like to keep their own identities from their family history, as we are now living in a modern cosmopolitan city and our communities reflect all the

diversity of culture and race that epitomise life in the 21st century. • Through running arts projects, such as craft making, dance, mosaic, model making, kite making and etc, students said that they have not only improved their practical skills but also attract their interests in Arts and culture. Some of the students have further studies after they left the Chinese school, e.g. have studied/are studying at Kingston College London and other U.K. universities. • Through meeting their counterparts from similar backgrounds, students can reduce their feelings of isolation, stress, anxiety and better integrate with confidence and intellectual development into their mainstream schools. Purpose 2 • The students said that they are able to learn Chinese and their level of Chinese language has improved in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking, both in Mandarin and Cantonese. As a result, the students, especially our graduates stated that they this has enhanced their educational opportunities and increase their confidence. They can use the language skills when they look for jobs in companies that have business links with China, or enhance employability in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and other Chinese-speaking countries or countries that use Chinese. • By organising different fundraising events such as concerts, sports days, outings etc, the students said that they were able to appreciate the time they are studying at Chinese school, because they learned not to take resourcing for granted. It also teaches them how to handle the responsibility of having expectations from people who donated money to support the school running. • In order to improve teachers’ level and skills, they have been undergone training each year through different channels, e.g. the experts from China came to our school each year to deliver training to the teachers. As result, students said that they were able to receive a better education at the Chinese School. Purpose 3 • Parents in the Chinese community are often marginalised due to various factors: language, unsociable working hours, cultural differences, etc. Therefore it is important for these parents to be able to have friendships and support in a forum where that it encouraged. Parents are therefore encouraged to join in the Parents Committee who are on duty each week. They are involved in registration, helping in classes, look after children during the break, being lollipop person at the start and end of school. They felt that they are part of the school and they are aware what the school expect them to help the children after the classes, e.g. with homework. • The Chinese School run different classes for parents, such as Chinese Language classes, English classes, dancing classes, art & crafts classes. They said that they have leant a lot from these classes and felt more confident, fulfilled and healthy. • These benefits are demonstrated through direct and positive feedback from parents, students, teachers and volunteers, as well as regular independent evaluations of our services by the Management Committee of the school. • The beneficiaries are the children of the Chinese families that are living in Northern Ireland who have been marginalised by the disadvantages of not being able to integrate fully into local communities due to a number of reasons, such as unsociable working hours of their parents. • A benefit to trustees may arise from our programme of ongoing training in good governance, finance etc. Through this training, trustees gain skills and experience that are transferable to other areas.
