Public benefits

The direct benefits which flow from our purpose include Providing “safe spaces” to hear and support the life issues, concerns; crisis and personal needs of men. Our service delivery supports and promotes male health and wellbeing and our charitable purposes address the public benefit by: Advancing health and saving lives. In pursuit of the public

benefit we offer professional counselling which increases self-esteem, the ability to manage everyday or historic problems and the ability to positively address and diminish/overcome issues relating to addiction, domestic or sexual abuse, self-harm, suicide ideation, relationship difficulties and other life difficulties. We instil in men a greater help seeking legacy which leaves them more open to seeking/accepting help in the future. This is borne out by the number of men who use or service again or refer others to us. Self-help groups, self-awareness and self-development programs allow men to gain increased awareness of their life difficulties in relation to issues like depression and gain better coping strategies to lead a more fruitful and richer life. In relation to anger our programs are early intervention processes which help decrease social and/or domestic violence at an earlier stage. Men receive a greater understanding of the context of anger, tools to disengage from angry situations, find emotional literacy, express the energy of anger healthier, learn conflict management and resolution skills and a process of communication. The outcomes are healthier, safer relationships for personal family and socially. Community men’s health promotion programs and awareness raising events allow us to directly engage with men around areas like healthy blood pressure, cholesterol, sugar and BMI where we provide health checks to establish a baseline of health for men in local communities currently highlighting and referring about a third of men as a result to their GPs for future exploration. Also men’s health weeks events which we help coordinate regionally focus on mental health, diet, obesity, unemployment, suicide, addictions etc. where many thousands of men receive health enhancing awareness. We also advocate for men’s issues of concern/inequality at national, regional, governmental and local level and have been instrumental in creating new emphasis on men’s work and services within all these areas, highlighting best practice in the field of engaging and support males. The outcomes for men in general are that they a have a conduit and advocate for their voice through MAN within the mechanisms and extensive networks and alliances we have helped create. These benefits are demonstrated through the scientific measuring tools used measuring and validating positive change to the lives of our service users, and through personal feedback ,and statutory and voluntary sector bodies whose own evaluations and feedback to MAN give testimony to the positive impact we make. The purposes of our charity may lead to harm were a beneficiary may receive inappropriate or insufficient support to meet their needs. We can show however that our safeguards, ethical and effective practises including internal and external on-going supervision and line management ensures this harm is outweighed by the benefits. The charity’s beneficiaries are directly the men we engage with while indirectly the positive change brought about through their engagement with our services has shown to have a positive impact on the lives of the family and friends of people our beneficiaries interact with daily. Our men’s health awareness events/campaigns also reach many thousands of beneficiaries indirectly through our promotions. The only private benefit flowing from this purpose is in relation to training offered to our volunteers/trustees on roles and responsibilities but this is incidental and necessary because of the need for best practice organisational requirements which are then also transferable to other arenas.
