Public benefits
The lack of community centre provision was one of the major issue for this rural community and in order to meet one of its primary objectives of community development and engagement a plan was required to rectify this. The opening of this new centre in Sept 14 has been a major benefit to the community and has already attracted a high usage rate
particularly in the evenings. It has been beneficial to the community to have somewhere to meet, formally or casually and to organise sporting, cultural, exercise, recreational and educational programs. The onsite coffee shop has provided an opportunity for social engagement that was not previously available. Purpose 1: The advancement of Community Development The benefits that flow from Purpose 1 are directly related to the fact that the village and surrounding area now has a much needed and long awaited focal point. People of the Aghagallon area now have somewhere to meet to carry on activities that lead to a number of tangible benefits for the community. People have become more engaged than previously and are coming forward to volunteer more than ever. With the correct training programs like Citizen21 we will be able to build leadership capacity in the community which will position us well for future developments. The evidence of these benefits can be assessed by comparing the number of activities carried on in the community than were available previously. Feedback from those participating in these activities will give an indication of the benefits they have received from this. The increasing occupancy rate of the centre is a measure of how successful and necessary it has been and the increasing turnover in the coffee shop is a measure of how it is being used for social engagement. Purpose 2:The advancement of education This purpose will benefit the community by giving them the opportunity to participate in education and training that would not have been available to them previously. This will increase the skills base in the community and lead to a more confident, enabled community. The further benefit of this increased skills capacity will be that there will be more people with the confidence to act in a volunteering role. There will also be a employment benefit for small local businesses and social enterprises. This purpose can be measured by the numbers of people with increased skills set with a resultant increase in the number of people acting as volunteers within the community. Polling local businesses could also demonstrate how the skills base in the area has improved. Purpose 3: The advancement of health The late number of exercise programs available will make a key contribution to the health and wellbeing of our community. All age groups will benefit as the current program caters for all ages and abilities. The provision of an over 50's class will bring an opportunity to participate in exercise that was not previously available to this age group and will enhance both their physical and emotional wellbeing. This purpose can be measured by the take up in all of our exercise programs. More people are now taking part in exercise programs than before. A survey of 50+ participants would confirm the success of this particular program. A general sense of wellbeing among all participant could also be surveyed. There are no identifiable harmful consequences of any of our purposes. The intended beneficiaries are all of the people of Aghagallon and surrounding district. There will be no private benefit flowing from any of our purposes.
