Public benefits
The trustees believe that our three purposes satisfy the three elements of the public benefit requirement. 1.The direct benefits that flow from this purpose include the development of physical fitness and the learning of new sporting skills among our beneficiaries. The benefits are evidenced through official Special Olympics research “Changing
lives through Sport”, feedback from beneficiaries and their families. The beneficiaries of this purpose are members of our community with an intellectual disability who from are eligible to join from the age of 6 years . A private benefit to trustees and /or other volunteers may arise from our programme of ongoing training in good governance. Through this training trustees and/or volunteers gain skills and experiences which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. 2.The direct benefits that flow from this purpose include an increase in self-esteem and confidence as the beneficiaries are able to share and demonstrate their skills, sporting knowledge and fitness with family, friends and the wider public; opportunities to attend local, national and international sporting events, opportunities to seek personal best bests and meet sporting personalities. The benefit is evident through Special Olympics research and from feedback from family members and the beneficiaries. A private benefit to trustees and /or other volunteers may arise from our programme of ongoing training in good governance, essential sport courses and and continuous professional development. Through this training trustees gain skills and experiences which are transferable to other settings. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. 3.The direct benefits that flow from this purpose include a significant improvement in the beneficiaries sense of self-worth, social skills and social interactions resulting in a greater public awareness of their capabilities. This benefit is evidenced through feedback from all the beneficiaries some of whom have gained the confidence, life skills and ability to move from dependant lives to supported living or partial independence. Many studies have been conducted within Special Olympics that support these benefits. There is no harm flowing from this purpose. The only potential private benefit is to the businesses that provide catering and/or venues for our beneficiaries social and leisure opportunities. These benefits are incidental and necessary to ensure the benefit is provided to our beneficiaries.
