Public benefits
The trustees are satisfied that both elements of the ‘public benefit’ requirement are met. The charity beneficiaries are people living within the Portstewart Area, visitors to the area and any person who has an interest in the Portstewart Community. The direct benefits which flow from the purposes include the enhancement of neighbourly spirit
which provides a safer and cohesive community, the opportunity for members of the Portstewart Community to engage with other influential bodies and express opinions and views in matters that concern the community and the introduction of new cultural entertainment to the wider community, using a public space to enhance community interaction and enhance volunteer opportunities in the local area as well as increased education and attendances of mixed cultures including new members of the community. These benefits are demonstrated by the feedback at community meetings in which brings all sections of the community together, positive relationships with government bodies including, local council, PSNI Community policing, PCSP and all Churches as well as numbers showing increased volunteering. No harm comes from the purpose. Benefits to committee members include ongoing training but these go towards gaining necessary skills to improve the charity’s governance and general day-to-day running. By completing this training the committee members do gain transferable new skills which can be applied to other settings. These benefits are necessary to ensure that benefit is provided to our beneficiaries. Wider private benefits may accrue to local businesses through increased footfall in the area at times of events and community activities, but this is incidental to the overall purpose of promoting good community relations and thereby developing the community.
