Public benefits

The overall purpose of the charity can be summarised as being to act as a community development network through which the beneficiaries will be assisted to access education, facilities for recreation in the interests of social welfare, health, relieving poverty, hardship and the aged and for promoting the Christian faith. The direct benefits

flowing from the purpose include improved access to various social welfare programmes (e.g., educational programmes, recreational programmes), improvement of the beneficiaries’ conditions of life, reductions in crime and anti-social behaviour and access to a variety of ad hoc services. The benefits can variously be demonstrated through the comparison of possible entrance and exit polls, improvements in government statistics compiled about crime and anti-social behaviour or feedback from organisers testifying that they have had access to available and cost-effective venue. The only conceivable harm from the purposes is the possibility that local businesses which provide similar services, such as hiring out event spaces, providing capacity building, education or developmental services etc. may suffer by not being as competitive as MPCA and thus not considered by event organizers etc. This potential outcome is far outweighed by the benefit of ensuring that a well maintained centre is available at no cost. In relation to private benefit, there is a chance that the Parish of Magheralin may receive positive recognition in the public’s eye because the centre(s) utilized by the charity are owned by the parish (or the Church of Ireland’s Representative Church Body), but such esteem is an incidental side effect of executing the purpose. No fees are usually charged beneficiaries, and thus people with financial difficulties face no exclusion.

What your organisation does

In order to provide “common grace for the common good,” MPCA is engaged in the following activities: (1) RedDoor: RedDoor focuses on the youth in Magheralin and Dollingstown. RedDoor provides a drop-in programme 4-days per week and runs educational/training programmes at least 1-day per week during school term. RedDoor also provides a summer

scheme with a slate of activities for youth. Dozens of youth from across the communities take advantage of these opportunities each week. The work of RedDoor touches many households. (2) Christians Against Poverty: The local chapter of Christians Against Poverty (“CAP”) associates with MPCA in order to provide services to individuals and households in the area of benefit who find themselves in dire economic circumstances. CAP helps people get out of debt primarily by negotiating with creditors and providing budgeting counseling. Scores of people thusly have been assisted not only in their economic circumstances, but as a result of seeing their debts diminished they have also enjoyed improved mental and emotional health. As a result of CAP, suicides have been prevented and family units have been preserved. (3) Seniors Ministry: Seniors Ministry builds the social welfare of the aged in the area by providing activities which decrease isolation and sedentariness, and increase physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Thus far, the Seniors Ministry has hosted movie nights and has organized a World War One centennial event. Over 100 seniors attend these activities.
